There is no denying that Arizona State has an impressive list of alumni. Another notable person to add to the list is Desiree Linden. Here's a brief on why she's so amazing.
1. She won the Marathon.
On Monday, April 16 Linden became the first American female to win the Boston Marathon since 1985. The 33-year dry spout was ended when Linden finished the 26.2-mile marathon in 2 hours 39 minutes and 54 seconds.
2. She almost did it before.
In 2011, Linden came close to victory, finishing only two seconds behind Caroline Kalel. Linden has an impressive list of achievement which includes being a two-time Olympian and the title of first team All American at Arizona State.
3. She did it in the rain.
On the day of this Boston Marathon, the temperature was in the 40s and it was winding and raining. The Boston Marathon is a 122-year tradition and has never been canceled because of weather. That didn't stop Linden.
4. She took her time.
but her time was the slowest winning time since 1978, according to The Associated Press. Last year's winner was Edna Kiplagat of Kenya. If the two times are compared it Kiplagat's time was about 18 minutes faster. However, the second place finisher, Sarah Sellers, came a little over four minutes behind Linden. So even though the conditions for the race were less than ideal there was no stopping Linden.
5. The rest of the US runners did great, too.
Not only did Linden run an outstanding race, but the USA team overall did very well. The USA took home seven of the top eight spots in the women's race.
Desiree Linden and the rest of the US team at the Boston Marathon: you did great and we're proud of you.
