Are You Who You Want To Be?
Jessie Burdette

It's a simple question, yet it provokes a lot of thought: are you who you want to be? Now before your mind goes wandering and you miss the point, stay with me for a minute. Let me start by saying, we should be striving to be the person that God has called us to be. We should not be discouraged by our current phase of life or wish that God made us differently because He created each of us unique. When I ask, "Are you who you want to be?", I mean in the little things that are within your control. If the answer is no, we have something in common.

As a child, I always had a picture in my head of what my life would look like throughout the different stages. Now I see that God's plan is far better than my own and I'm working on letting go of my own ideas. However, there are still many things that I would like to better about myself and my life but like most people, I struggle to make those changes. So why is that?

Most likely, you have already thought of a few small things that you would like to improve in your life just within the two minutes of read this. Maybe you want to eat healthier and work out so you can live a longer, healthier life for yourself and your loved ones. Maybe you want to become more confident and bold in speaking up and taking chances. Maybe you want to work on consciously putting others first every day and going out of your way to help someone. Or maybe you don't get in the Word on a daily basis and haven't for a while. Whether it be a bad habit that you want to quit or a good habit that you want to get into, we all have to start somewhere. It's not going to happen on its own, so get up and do it!

Set an achievable goal for yourself and write it on a sticky note. Put that note on your mirror, by your bedroom door, in your car, or wherever you can't miss it. Stop saying that tomorrow is the day because tomorrow never comes; it's time to start today. I don't mean to sound like Shia LaBeouf, but the man has a point. (If you're confused, just google "Shia LaBeouf-Just do it". You're welcome.) It's time we stop putting stuff off and go after our goals.

We can always learn more and improve ourselves. I know I personally have multiple things I want to work on right now and I'm tired of waiting for tomorrow. I've set my goals and asked people to hold me accountable and I'm ready to go for it. I hope this was exactly what you needed to encourage you to do the same. Be the person you keep saying you want to be.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
