The definition from the American Psychological Association:
"Anxiety is an emotion characterized by feelings of tension, worried thoughts and physical changes like increased blood pressure. People with anxiety disorders usually have recurring intrusive thoughts or concerns. They may avoid certain situations out of worry. They may also have physical symptoms such as sweating, trembling, dizziness or a rapid heartbeat."
We've all been in a situation where we feel anxious, whether it's before a final or a speech. The only difference with anxiety is that some of us experience anxiety for things that we shouldn't feel anxious about in the first place. For example, ordering food at a restaurant, paying at the cash register or just saying hi to someone you've never met.
My experience with my anxiety may not be similar to everyone's, but maybe a few may relate.
I feel:
-Constant worry
-Fear
-Chest pain
-Increased heartbeat
Things that help me:
- Writing/ keeping a journal
It is important to keep your thoughts not only on your mind, but also on paper to give them a rest. We've all been there, going over the same thought more than 20 times in just a minute. Writing will help you calm these thoughts.
- Talking to people
If you know someone who also has anxiety, or someone who just understands the illness and is a good listener, it's important to talk to them. Sometimes you just need to talk about what's on your mind.
- Coloring apps
I've never done something more relaxing than this. I listen to music while I color and it makes time go faster and also it silences my thoughts.
It is important to learn what triggers your anxiety. You can't always avoid it, but you will learn to cope with it. You can take breaks when you feel they are necessary. Although everyone's experience with anxiety is different, you should still give these tips a try. You never know what helps calm you until you try it. With anxiety it is a trial and error situation to find the things that calm our minds. Once you find yours, feel free to share it to help others who are still clearing how to deal with it.
