Going To conventions: Why I Love Nerd Culture

If you think you're a nerd and you haven't gone to a convention of any kind, I highly recommend it.

Going To conventions: Why I Love Nerd Culture
J. Brandon Cunha

Just recently I went to my very first convention and I can say, without exaggeration, that it changed my life. It also makes me really glad about how far we have come as a society from when I was in middle school and used to get made fun of for liking video games and anime. But now, those things are considered cool and nerd culture is on the rise in popular media. From comic books, to video games, to anime and manga, there is a convention out there for everyone. It just felt so liberating being surrounded by people with similar interests to my own.

And even though I had never gone to a convention before, I decided to also dress-up in a costume I made from scratch with my own two hands which both heightened my excitement and stress leading up to the convention. Something experienced veterans of cosplay call the "Con Crunch". It was difficult working with a sewing machine for the first time since seventh grade Home-Ec but rewarding because of the results. Despite it being my first costume I have ever made, I was really happy about all the support my friends gave me and the reception my cosplay received once I was at the convention.

If you've ever wanted to know how the character actors at Disney World feel dressed up in costume all day, try cosplaying. The whole day that I dressed up in costume I was stopped by people asking for pictures and even asking for my professional cosplay Instagram (which I don't have); and each time I had to strike a pose or even hug someone saying, "Wait, are you Henry?...I LOVE YOU!". I can't say I was expecting that kind of reaction to my costume but it was extremely uplifting and I only wish I had gone to a convention sooner.

If you think you're a nerd and you haven't gone to a convention of any kind, I highly recommend it. You'll meet so many awesome people and you'll have a great time bonding with your friends. Road-tripping and sharing a hotel room with someone (or several others) is the ultimate friendship test, especially if you have a cosplayer around, like me!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
