And The Grind Continues...

This past week has been tough for a lot of people across the country. As a response, here's a list of quotes that the members of my Odyssey team love to look to for a push in the right direction. Whether it be from civil rights leaders, athletes, authors, celebrities, or characters from awesome television shows, inspiration can emerge from a variety of sources! These words keep us going, and we encourage you all to keep going as well. Seek out motivation, or be open to letting it find you...you'll be surprised how it can help shape the trajectory of your life in a very powerful way!

1. Reminder to keep going and moving forward, regardless of the ups and downs of life.

“If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”
- Martin Luther King Jr.

2. Never care what anyone else besides yourself thinks.

"When you've reached a point in your life, there are people waiting to see you fall, rather than let gravity take you down, sometimes you have to take matters into your own hands and fly."
- Justin Bieber

3. Despite the racial climate of our country, remember to stay hungry. Work ethic is important...success will come as a result.

"You have to be twice as good as them to get half of what they have."
- Rowan Pope from Scandal

4. Whenever you think you've executed something well, remember that you can always do better. There is always room for improvement no matter where you are on the spectrum of novice to professional.

"Good, better, best. Never let it rest. Until your good is better and your better is best."
- Tim Duncan

5. Reminder that everyone deserves to be able to respect themselves, regardless of how society may keep us from realizing that sometimes.

"To free us from the expectations of others, to give us back to ourselves—there lies the great, singular power of self-respect."
- Joan Didion

6. Stay grounded, and be inspired to explore further!

"Not all those who wander are lost."
- JRR Tolkien

7. Fight through every single obstacle that comes into your life.

"Life kicks you around sometimes, it scares you and it beats you up. There's a day when you realize you're not just a survivor, you're a warrior. You're tougher than anything it throws your way."
- One Tree Hill

8. You can be fabulous and not be thought of as bragging. Never dumb yourself down to make someone feel better!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
