On May 8, Delta Gamma and Phi Delta Theta of Kent State University will be hosting the first Anchors Aweigh 5K.
The 5K is being held in honor of Kent State and Delta Gamma alumna, Ali Fuhrman.
Fuhrman passed away tragically in a car accident in late December of last year. "Ali put her heart and soul into Delta Gamma so we decided to make an all Greek scholarship to help a future Greek student enjoy Kent as much as Ali did," said Delta Gamma chapter president Brittany Rhoa. We want to remember Ali forever as well as give opportunities to students for years to come. The Kent State Greek community is unlike any other. They have shown unwavering support, and I am greatly looking forward to seeing the turnout of this event."
A GoFundMe page was set up for the Fuhrman family and raised over 25,000 dollars in under two weeks. The page was shared over 3,000 times on social media.
Profits from the race and various fundraisers will be put towards an endowed scholarship open to the Greek community at Kent State.
Friends remember Fuhrman as a kindhearted and bright individual within the Kent State and Greek communities."Ali was the most beautiful human you could have ever met. Any day you had a frown on your face she would change that in an instant. She was a friend you could always count on," said sorority sister and friend Megan Downs. "Even people she did not know would say she was outgoing and welcoming to anyone who approached her. I'll never forget her and will miss her every day. I love you so much, Furmy."
Many students saw Furhman as a helping hand and someone who could make anyone smile. "Ali would always have a reaching hand to anyone in need and would talk to anyone in a room," said sorority sister and friend, Elayna Brizendine. "Her laugh was absolutely contagious, and I can still hear it to this day. She is greatly missed by everyone in the Greek community and everyone she has touched."
Furhman touched many lives during her short 24 years. "From the moment I met her, I always looked up to her, and that still stands true today, but now she's our anchor angel. I feel so blessed and grateful to have had the chance to know her," said friend and sorority sister Keri Richmond.
Registration for the 5K will begin at 8 a.m on May 8. The race will officially start at 9 a.m. at 105 Riseman Drive on Kent State's campus.
