An Overdue Thank You To My Mom

Being away from home for college makes you realize what you miss from home. Material items like my bedroom, my own bathroom, burritos, or favorable weather top my list of what I miss about home, however how much I miss my mom is unmatched by any concrete possession. For me, the saying ‘you never know what you have until it’s gone’ rings true when I think of my mom.

Although this may be expected from a mother, you are truly my biggest fan. Supporting me with my crazy endeavors from my younger years into high school enabled me to lead with confidence in my favored direction, even when I didn’t know my exact destination. Also, giving me the right amount of freedom to explore the world at a young age gave me the courage to try new things which later developed into life-long passions.

Along with always cheering me on, you have also served as a role model for me. Even if I didn’t realize this growing up, everything you've done serves as a valuable lesson to me. Seeing you (and dad) at nearly every one of my games proves dedication, challenges breed hard-work, watching Dateline and HGTV are acceptable pastimes, and exposing me to good food brings happiness. Also, thank you for demonstrating patience to me. Being patient with not only me but almost everyone taught me the importance of waiting. Things in life aren’t always perfectly timed, however you proved that being patient with it is a successful tactic.

Even though it was frustrating growing up, thank you for challenging me. In retrospect, because you fought with me to do my homework right when I got home and encouraged me to take more challenging classes I developed into a more hard working and high achieving individual. These two assets that you instilled in me have and will continue to benefit me throughout life, something I am eternally grateful for.

Most importantly, thank you for always being there. Although we are geographically separated, our long distance relationship has brought us closer. I look forward to the next phone call to fill you in on a part of my life that you are not physically there for. You've been an ear to listen as well as a wealth of knowledge and advice which has been key when you are not immediately there.

Mom, thank you for always cheering me on, being the best role model, challenging me to be the best version of myself, and being my support system.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
