An Open Letter to My Dog, Zoey

I know you can't read, but in the case that you have superpowers, this is for you.

An Open Letter to My Dog, Zoey

Dear Zoey,

I know you are miles and miles away, but I am always thinking about you. You are a man's best friend, right? I really miss coming home to you; coming home to you was the best. You made every day feel like it was the first time we saw each other in a long time. You made me feel like I actually mattered.

Remember when we used to go on walks together? Remember the car rides I used to take you on? Remember all the scratches you left on the passenger side door? Remember when we played hide and go seek? You were always the best at that game. You always managed to find me no matter where I was. Only if I could have captured those memories on camera, but you were always camera shy and ran away.

Sometimes I am tempted to bring you here. We can have endless sleepovers and stay up as late as we want, but according to my lease, it says they will put you in dog jail and take a good chunk of money from me. However, you are like the best at hide and go seek, so we should be fine, right?

How's life for you? I have seen you've gained some weight, Mom and Dad have been feeding you well huh? Do you still destroy the kitchen when the family is gone? You have to hide your trail better because they always find the evidence. By the way, Happy Belated Birthday! I know your birthday just past; I really wish I made it out there. Did you get everything you wished for? Probably...Mom and Dad spoil you the most. You get like a new bed every couple months and new toys. I don't even have a bed back at home, my room is not my room anymore.

Anyways, College is fun. I am having a great time out here. My stress level increases day by day, but I am making it through. Classes are pretty difficult, but I have a 3.0 semester GPA right now. Are you proud? I know it's not the best, but I have about a little over a month to get to that 4.0.

Remember Becky, my girlfriend? She is the one that smells like a Cubs fan. I know it's not your favorite smell, and it's not my favorite either, but she makes me happy and makes me laugh. I got used to it, so I know you can too. She is doing well also. She landed a couple internships for the future, so that's a plus. I am still waiting for her to cook for me again, but that's a work in progress.

I know you are getting older and older, and minutes are turning into hours, and hours are turning into days, but do not worry because I will be back to see you again. When I come back, can we cuddle like the good old days? That is a necessity. Do you still snore? We should record ourselves at night and see who wins, I think Dad still holds the title. I love you and miss you a lot, Zoey. Until the next time bud.

Your Best Friend,

P.S. Here is a picture of us so you don't forget about me.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
