Stereotyping: Don't. It Makes You Look Like A Butt

The story: white couple, Latina waitress and a receipt saying, "We Only Tip Citizens." I should be writing about Drake or Kim K, but this pissed me off. You two are grown adults, so why don't you behave like ones? And it really sucks that both of you are White, like it really sucks 'cause you just reinforce negative thoughts that people have of your race. I've met some of the coolest White people in the world and they've set a bar for racial sensitivity that even affects how I live my life. I had high expectations for you because you had one job: eat and leave, but you dramatically underperformed. I'll make things plain and simple:

You stereotyped.

You got a Latina as a waitress and assumed she was undocumented because of the news, or people you know, or her accent or whatever excuse you can come up with. You were wrong, she's a citizen just like you. Every Black person isn't Tupac, every White person isn't David Duke. If you're gonna be a jerk (which you shouldn't unless you want to go viral), you could at least be factually correct.

.

You reinforce negativity.

You let me down and you let my white friends down, not cool bro. You could have made a change and brought positivity to a person of color, but nah. You just had to try and embarrass her, but failed. You really embarrassed yourself and have made life harder for people who look like you that are nice and not racist.

You played yourself.

You could have been classy or discreet about not liking her -- you could have said a "friend" worked there, pointed to some random person and asked for them to serve you, but nope. You just had to take shots at her through some passive aggressive comment you couldn't even say to her face.

At least you signed the receipt and did it in a public place so the Internet knows who you are now. #Fail.

Don't hate. appreciate.

Even if she wasn't a U.S. citizen, you should respect the fact that she's busting her butt to make a living for herself. I have tons of friends that are immigrants or undocumented (of all shades) and their work ethic motivates me to go after my goals. We both know that your not happy with your life and have to take your bad mood out on someone else but that solves nothing.

Maybe you were jealous of her beauty and gorgeous hair? Either way, respect the lives of others so you can appreciate your own life and elevate it. #Appreciate2Elevate

I admit, I'm biased. I've been fortunate enough to have met lots of genuine people from every race (literally every. single. one), so I don't know what it's like to carry the spite you have. But homie, I can tell from the video footage of you in the restaurant that I'm half your age. If I can treat others respectfully, and give them props, so can you.

A good start towards giving props is tipping your waitress. #Advice.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
