To The Girl Who Taught Me How To Live With Another Human Being

Moving away to college is really cool and everything; however, there’s one thing that might seem a little scary — your roommate.

Whether you have known them prior to coming to school or you were randomly matched, there’s that small worry that you won’t get along or (if you know them) you’ll hate living with them. This open letter goes out to the first roommate, the first person I had to share a room with in my entire life, and this goes out to you.

Dear Roommate,

When I told people I came into school knowing you, so many people told me that we’d hate each other by the end of the semester, and that scared me.

I didn’t want to hate you because you seemed really cool in our program we met in back in high school. You were the first person I had to share a living space with.

At home, I had my own room, my own space and everything, but by living with you, I learned so much, and I even gained one of my first close friends.

When we first moved in together, we didn’t really know what to make of each other. It was awkward, not going to lie. However, over time, through having basically the same schedule and hanging out and chatting from time to time, we became good friends by the end of the semester. I could go to you for anything, and you could come and talk to me about anything. We had our fun times like staying up late in the lab working on our projects or trying to study for that intro class or even our Spongebob Karaoke nights.

After leaving for break, we had our space, but after coming back from winter break we became even closer. We spent more time together because of certain classes and when issues arose we went straight to each other. Through all the late nights, the tears, the frustration of a paper, the funny moments, and the small things we do for each other, I don’t mind living with someone now. I am perfectly comfortable with you. It is as if you and I were perfectly made to live in the same room.

Thank you for making freshman year more interesting.

Sincerely,

Your roommate

Now let me rewrite this letter.

Dear Roomie, Best Friend, and basically Sister,

Thank you for all the crazy memories we’ve share living together. I cannot imagine living with anyone else in my first year of college. Although we were only acquaintances in August, that changed in the first semester.

We had burping contests, makeovers, our fun Saturday nights out, weird snapchats, hysterical karaoke nights, homework time, shopping sprees, roomie nap time, DIYs, dress up time, late night in that sewing lab, crazy conversations (like the definition of a room) and so much more. You will always be by my side for the next four years and for the rest of my life. I am so happy we decided to room together our senior year. I am happy I gained a new friend for life and I know that even though we decided to room with different people next year, I’ll see you basically all the time due to classes and merely because we want to hang out.

Thank you for making my freshman year so much more interesting, memorable, and fun. It wouldn’t be like this without you.

Love always,

Your Roomie, Best Friend, and basically Sister.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
