An Open Letter To New Sisters In Greek Life

Dear new sisters,

Hello! I'm so glad you're here and that you've found your home in Greek life! I know this time is a little confusing and scary but this is one of the best places to be! You probably don't know it, but we have been waiting all summer for your arrival! We have so much planned for you, but that has to remain a secret for now. I remember what it was like, being a new member. It's exciting and you're learning all you need to know to become a full member. Here's some things I wish I had known before I became a member.

It's okay to ask questions! Nine times out of ten, your new sisters want you to ask questions! It's a sign that you want to be the best that you can be. We've all been where you are and we all realize that there's so much you need to learn. We are here to help and we want you to understand as much as you can. You may have heard sorority stereotypes, that we're all snobby and just put on a front to get new members. That is not the case at all! We are genuinely excited to have you as part of our sisterhood, and we will do our very best to be the best sisters for you!

It's okay to ask to borrow shirts. Most sororities require you to wear letters on special dates and since you are a new member, you won't have any of your own yet. We know this and usually the girls of your sorority will offer you shirts until you have a chance to get your own. The worst thing is not to ask and to be stuck with only one shirt. We want you to feel welcome and this is one of the ways to do it.

If you want to attend an event, do it! We want you to join us and be a part of the event. Most times, some of your sisters will ask you to attend. This is a great way to meet more sisters and to bond. It's great to see new members feel welcome and participating! Each sorority has a philanthropy and community services opportunities to help better yourself as an individual, as a sorority, and the campus at large. If you have ideas, you'll be able to voice your opinions, and have a way to implement your ideas. It's encouraged! We love having new ways to serve the community!

Most of all, I want you to take a breath, you’ll soon be tied to something bigger than just yourself. You'll have a small army of girls to carry you through the bad times and laugh with you during the good times. You'll have late night movie sessions, car drives to Taco Bell at 1 a.m. and you'll be doing it with people who will become your family. This is going to be some of the best times of your life, and we feel honored that we get to be a part of it with you.

I can't wait until you get here, and we already love you so much!

Love,

Ash

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
