No, She Does Not Wear A Cape, Yes, My Mom Is My Superhero

Superheroes seemed to always be defined as someone wearing a cape and having superhuman abilities.

My superhero doesn’t wear a cape and can’t fly from place to place. My superhero just happens to be the woman who brought me into this world (she never lets me forget she can take me out of this world just as fast as she brought me into it). I often time struggle to put into words just how amazing you are. Sometimes I think the words I say don’t do you enough justice. So, I’ve decided to try out in this letter. As you read this I hope you realize how much you mean to me and how extraordinary you are

Dear Mom,

You always have sacrificed so much for Alexa and me, you have provided us with everything we could possibly need and more. That’s just the type of person you are, you would drop anything for us. I am beyond grateful for that and I can’t thank you enough for all you do. Whether it was leaving work to drive to the middle of nowhere for my basketball games, or attending concerts with me as you watched me cry and freak out, or just sending me a text on my bad days. I know you would do anything for me.

I’ve been incredibly blessed to be able to have a mom who valued freedom of thoughts and expression. I know I wouldn’t have been able to find myself if I was not allowed to be free. Thanks for always being supportive through all the hair color changes, the piercings, and tattoos. Thanks for listening to me when I expressed my own views and beliefs, even if you didn’t always agree with them, and just letting me be me.

Mom, you have always possessed such strength and kindness, even if you don’t see yourself that way sometimes. I’ve never met anyone stronger than you mom. I’m so grateful to have someone as incredible as you in my life. You inspire me to challenge myself every day to become a better person.

Not everyone is as blessed as I am to have a mom, who’s also their best friend. You are truly my best friend. I really don’t know what I’d do without you. Although I’m a little distance away at college, you remain my rock. You’ve always been my #1 fan and knowing that you’re always in my corner makes life a little easier. I know you will help me through every crossroad I face in life and be holding my hand each step of the way.

Mom, thank you for everything you do for me. Thank you for the warm hugs, neck massages in living room, and being you. I miss you so much. Thank you for being my superhero. I love you more than black olives and chocolate chip cookies.

Love,

Gabrielle (your favorite daughter after you read this letter)

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
