An Open Letter To Spring Semester

Is it too late to say sorry (not sorry)?

An Open Letter To Spring Semester

Dear Spring Semester,

We’re usually not friends. Sorry, but you always involve snow and we know the campus wouldn’t have a snow day even if hell froze over. Also, you always love to get everyone sick. “Achoo” is the most common sound on campus (cue the hand sanitizer). And another thing — you always want me to work really hard, but deep down I know that summer is around the corner. Of course I love getting back and reuniting with friends; but you, spring semester, I don’t want to reunite with you. #sorrynotsorry

I have to say, you and I have always had a love/hate relationship. I really don’t care for you. Sorry again. It’s just that I’ve always had the hardest times in my life when you’re around. Granted, it comes around every year (the anniversary of my grandma’s passing); however, you just intensify it. Believe me, I never want to go to class on that day. Frankly, I don’t like drudging across campus when the wind is howling, my umbrella is inverting and I’m turning into Mary Poppins in the commuter lot. Hey, I guess the weather isn’t your fault. I’ll blame Mother Nature for that.

Another thing — there aren't too many holidays during the spring semester. But, we can all agree that your best feature is spring break. Who doesn’t want a week-long break from homework, a vacation to a tropical location or time to catch up with friends? And by friends, I mean my bed. See, that’s the thing: spring semester doesn’t really become spring until… who knows anymore? This weather is cray!

You are too confused, spring semester. You start out with blustery temps. It snows. It sleets. It rains. People are always sick. Then we get to deal with the warmer weather cropping up. April showers bring May flowers, right? Well, the warm air and fresh flowers are beautiful scents; however, frizzy hair and sticky classrooms aren’t cute. Yes, we have air conditioning (in most buildings); but for goodness sake, I really wish we didn’t have to be so darn close to the beach! I mean, hello, I’d totally rather be oceanfront than learning about, well… anything!

Having said all that, this spring semester holds a special place in my heart: it’s my last spring semester in my undergrad career! I graduate a semester early, so this time next year I’ll be graduated, working full time and prepping for law school. Yikes, I’m getting old. I don’t know, spring semester — the times we’ve had together are bittersweet, but I think I’ll be glad to see you go!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
