An Open Letter To My Recruitment Counselor

You have and will forever hold an imprint on my college life.

An Open Letter To My Recruitment Counselor
Alexis Eschelman

First off, I just want to thank you. You took unpaid time out of your life to guide a group of girls through the recruitment process. You did this, not because you had to, but because you wanted to, and I am ever so thankful because you have forever impacted my life.

During recruitment we went through highs and lows as a group; some girls dropped but most stayed. You never once faltered with your everlasting support for every single one of us. You never once showed any signs of fatigue even though your body was sleepless. But what you did do is you always supported us. You served as my backbone into the college transition. You assured me that my home away from home was here, in one of these chapter houses. If it weren’t for you, I may not have had the faith in myself to make it through the entire recruitment process but because of you, I did stay.

You showed me that “imperfections” weren’t real. You taught me that sometimes people mistake the word “imperfection” for “unique.” You managed to show me within a week’s span of time to appreciate these differences in everyone. You taught me how to see these characteristics in myself as beautiful. You taught me that beauty wasn’t external or a certain product of makeup; you taught me that beauty was what I made of myself.

Your passion for the Panhellenic community and the women going through recruitment has inspired me to live to the highest of standards of sisterhood and scholarship. It has taught me to appreciate the strength of the women around me whatever chapter house they may be in.

Not only did you help me through recruitment, you inspired me with your loving heart. Your humbleness and selflessness for others have become a virtue that I now strive to live by. I hope to one day fill the same shoes that you did as a recruitment counselor and, even if I can’t, I will try my best to live by the highest of standards that you set for me.

Finally, I just want to let you know how much of an impact you have made in my life. And words can never do justice to what you did for me as well as all of the other girls in our cluster. I forever will remember you and will always be thankful for the home you led me to, the inspiration you gave to me, the example you set for me, and the unconditional love that you were forever willing to give.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
