An Open Letter To My Home Friends

To my lifelong best friends,

College is a time for new beginnings. It is full of so many new and wonderful experiences that lead you to even more new and wonderful people. Whether it’s your sorority sisters, classmates, roommates, or even someone you met in the coffee line, college leads you to some of your very best friends. I know that college has led me to some of my best friends and that you guys have made your very own new best friends too.

I’m happy that you’ve made new best friends. I know sometimes we all get jealous over the “new best friends,” but I’m really and truly happy for you. I’m happy that you’ve met amazing people and found new friendships that make you happy! Your new best friends make me happy, too. Your friendship has brought me so many laughs and smiles over the years, and I’m so glad that someone else gets to experience them, too.

Thank you for always being there. I know that no matter how far apart we are, I can call you at 2 a.m. and you’ll pick up. You’ve been there through it all, and I know you always will be. No matter how many stupid things I do along the way ;)

Thank you for bringing me into your family. If I don’t like the dinner my parents are cooking, I know that I can drive to your house and a place will be set for me before I even arrive. Some of our parents even ask for a headcount before dinner, because the friends “just tend to show up.” I know that I’m always welcome at your house, regardless of whether you’re home or not. At this point, I basically come over to hang out with your parents and siblings, anyway.

Thank you for being my biggest support system. You always have and always will be the people that I call or text first when something major happens. Or not so major.

Thanks for putting up with me. It’s been years of friendship. At this point, you know all of my quirks, bad habits, and deepest secrets. Yet you decide to stick by me anyway. (Go you!) You’ve seen it all and here you stay.

Thanks for making me the person that I am today. You’ve taught me so many things throughout the years. Things about myself, the world, and life in general. Without you, your support, and your friendship, I would not be the person I am today. So thank you.

Thank you for being my people. All of my friends at school know you. Whether it’s from the million pictures of you hanging on my wall, our constant group messages, or the fact that I never stop talking about you, all of my friends know you. They know you as “my home friends” or “my best friends” or the cheesy group name we refer to ourselves as. I love you, and therefore, everyone I know and meet is forced to love you too. You’re my people, how could I let anyone get by without knowing who you are? You’ve made me laugh the loudest, seen me cry the hardest (and I am not a pretty crier), and you’ve made me smile the most. Thank you for that.

Thank you for being you. You set the standard for friendship impossibly high! No one could ever compare to you. Thanks for being the best people in the world! I’m so lucky to have you.

You always have been and always will be my forever friends. Thanks for that. We may not get to have our regular wine nights as often now that we’re in college, but college hasn’t changed us a bit. We may go months without seeing each other, but once we’re all together, it’s like we never left.

It’s hard to put into words just how thankful I am for your friendship but I did my best :)

Love,

Someone Very Thankful For Her Home Friends

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
