A Thank You Letter To My Long Distance Best Friends

Long distance, the dreaded phrase when it comes to going away to college. Deciding to go fourteen hours away from home made me fearful about what I would do without my friends from back home. My best friends in high school are the ones I went to for everything. They knew all my secrets, flaws, and quirks that made me the person I am. They were my other half, and the thought of not having them by my side to tackle life with freshman year was frightening. With a lot of them back home for college and me away, I made it my goal that no matter the distance, that my relationships with them would not fade away. Although not having their lockers across the hall from me or forcing them to go on late night food runs has been difficult, I have successfully maintained my long distance relationship with my friends. Here’s a long overdue thank you note to them for still being my go to girls even 1,000 miles apart.

Thanks for always answering my Facetimes. Even if it’s in between classes or late at night, seeing your face and catching up on life never fails to brightens up my day. I love finding out about the new friends you’ve made, exciting adventures you’ve had, and struggles you’ve overcome.

Thanks for always listening. Even when I tell you about stories from college about people you don’t know, thanks for acting amused. I love knowing that whenever I need someone to talk to, I can count on you to always be there ready to hear it.

Thanks for still letting me vent about my past. You are aware of every detail from my high school life, and regardless if you’ve heard about the same drama a million times, thanks for letting me repeat the same vent you’ve already heard.

Thanks for always being honest with me. Despite being f hours away, I still lean on you for advice whether for more serious things in my life, or something as simple as outfit advice. I know that you wont sugar coat it, and you have my best interest in hand.

Thank you for always valuing my happiness as if it were yours. You are always there to celebrate the triumphs of my year and cheer me on. You always know how to how to pick me up when I am down and brighten my spirits like no one else can.

Thanks for always making it exciting to go home. Every time I am on my way home, I get so excited to reunite with you. Whenever I’m back with you, it’s as if we’ve never separated. Thanks for always make going home so memorable.

Thank you for always being there for me. I know that no matter what happens in life, I can turn to you. Even if we go a couple days without talking, I know our friendship will never waiver.

I guess it’s true they say distance makes the heart grow fonder. At the end of the day you’re my day one, bridesmaid, and best friend. I love you forever and ever and couldn’t picture my life without you. Regardless of the new friendships I make in college, nothing can can change our friendship and the love I have for you. Through thick and thin, you are always there. I am confident that no matter where life takes us, we will be friends forever. Love you so much!

Parks and Recreation excitedly gathered around a laptop at a table in an office setting.

The library. Club lib. The place every college student goes when they want to try and be a productive member of society. Who better to explain your experience than Parks and Rec?

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
