An Open Letter To My Group Chat

Dear (insert name of group chat here),

You all know that traditional group chats have a really bad reputation. They’re really annoying and can be quite overwhelming. This is just a broad sweep though, and not every group chat is like that—especially when you’re talking to people who you actually want to be talking to.

Thank goodness for you crazy people, though, because you make me appreciate these chats. I’m not going to lie; it does get pretty crazy when everyone responds at the same time. This causes our phones to constantly go off and I’m sure my mom is convinced that my phone is possessed or something. And God forbid we walk away from our phone for the slightest second; that just leads to a lot of confusion in trying to catch up on what’s even being said in the chat. Even though chats have the potential to be really annoying, I’m grateful for every single one of you in it and for all the good, bad, happy, crazy and sometimes sad things that it consists of.

Life is crazy. There’s always so much going on and everyone’s always so busy doing their own thing. This being said, I totally understand how unrealistic it is to talk to you guys every second of the day. I really love how that mentality isn’t expected at all. We don’t have to talk in our group chat all the time, but as soon as someone texts, no matter the significance, everyone responds and is completely engaged in conversation. I love how it can start with a ridiculous statement or comment and spiral into something even more ridiculous and sometimes even something serious.

I love how as soon as something substantial happens in any one of our lives, our first instinct is to text in the group. You guys are the first people that I feel inclined to tell everything to. It’s always funny how one person’s story can intertwine with another’s. I also appreciate instead of sending a bunch of individual messages I have the liberty to talk all of my favorite people at the same time.

I love how over the years the name of our chat has gotten more and more ridiculous. The more emoji’s the better right?

I love how there’s really no true rhyme or reason to our conversations. Someone can send a picture, ask a question or say something ridiculous all at the same time and it doesn’t faze anyone. I also appreciate the wide array of personalities that make up the chat. I can always look forward to at least one snarky or sarcastic comment, a confusing statement, an absurd reply and just overall recklessness.

I even love how when the group separates into separate chats because we know whose fault it is (the one friend who refuses to text off of her phone and only communicates on her computer). We all have that one friend who kind of falls off the face of the earth. If you text them individually they’re likely to not answer, but for some reason, they’ll always answer in the group.

Even though there are a bunch of negative connotations associated with group chats, there are also a lot of positives too. I really appreciate you crazy people and what you bring to my life as well as keeping the group chat interesting.

Love,

Your favorite member of the group chat xoxox

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
