An Open Letter To My Future Big

I cannot wait to have you be beside me throughout my journey here at school and life.

Dear Future Big,

Who knew that I would actually be here today saying that I will have a Big in about two weeks. I have been so stressed out trying to deal with balancing the school life and sorority life that I lost track of time. Can you believe that I have been in the sorority for a month now? It seems like just yesterday I was meeting you and the other 176 girls; it just hit me--I will soon have someone to look up to more than ever.

You already know who I am, and that kind of scares me. Do you want to scream every time you see me? Do you want to tell me already that I am your little? How did you decide to choose me?

I have no idea who you are. I am counting down the days until I can turn around after you tap my shoulder and see your beautiful loving face welcome me with open arms.

I bet you are beyond stoked to see my reaction and freak out when I realize that you are you. You are my BIG! So I just have a few things to say to you.

1. I will ask you a million questions.

I still have yet to figure out this sorority life, so I will probably text you about 20 times a day. I will ask you if my outfit for the night is super cute, if my roommate is being irrational, or I just need someone to drink wine and watch New Girl with.

2. I will look to you like my older sister.

I will look to you for everything. I will not know what do when I get a bad grade on an exam; I will not know what to do when all of our formals come around. I will always have someone to go to dinner or shopping with. I will always have someone by my side who I can say, yes she's my BIG sister.

3. I cannot wait to be spoiled.

I've been spending what feels like a million dollars on clothes that have my new home on them. We all have done the same thing when we were pledge class babies. Now you have well over 50 t-shirts and sweatshirts and have no idea what to do with them. I will gladly take care of them for you and pass them down to my little. I will wear them with pride; when everyone asks where I got it, I will say that my big sister got it for me.

4. I will forever cherish you.

I hope you know that since you decided to be my big, you are now an honorary bridesmaid in my future wedding. I may be single, but you are loved by me enough that you are already going to be holding a bouquet in my wedding. I am beyond glad to have you be by my side throughout absolutely everything.

I cannot thank you enough for you picking me to be your little. I cannot wait for these next few weeks where I am constantly guessing who you are. I also cannot wait for the moment when I learn who you are. My life as a sorority girl is just starting, and I am so glad that you will be a part of my journey here.

Parks and Recreation excitedly gathered around a laptop at a table in an office setting.

The library. Club lib. The place every college student goes when they want to try and be a productive member of society. Who better to explain your experience than Parks and Rec?

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
