Dear Puppy,
I want to start off by telling you how much I miss you.You were my best friend for 14 years and even though it has been a year since you've been away from me, it's still weird not having you around. I look for you whenever I come home from school and my heart still stops when I don't hear your paws sliding around on our wooden floors as you race to see me. I still leave room for you on the floor next to me in front of Mom's chair when we have a family movie night, and I still wait for you to lick my tears when I'm having a bad day.
Please don't get jealous when I ask mom for another dog. You are irreplaceable; I just want another friend around. Even when that day comes, please know that you will always have a special place in my heart that any new dog cannot replace. You were my first dog, a special bond that cannot be compared. I will always remember the first day we brought you home when you were running around on our kitchen floor in the old house with all the neighbors. I remember how I promised Mom and Dad that I would walk you every single day. I'm sorry (to Mom and Dad too) that I didn't do that more often.
Thank you for being the perfect dog, and I mean that. You rarely gave us any problems; you didn't eat the furniture, you never ran away, and you didn't even bite. You had enough energy to keep us going but had no problem laying around with us on a rainy day.
As you got older, you never failed to impress me. I have never seen a 14 year old dog with as much energy as you. You were out running on the beach the day before you left us and kept it interesting until the end. You were even jumping up on the couches as an old lady, which you weren't supposed to but you also knew we would let it slide.
Just because you aren't around anymore, doesn't mean I don't think of you. I'm that crazy person who keeps a picture of their dog framed in their room (you're sitting in a blue frame next to my bed). Every time it snows, I imagine how happy you would be running out in your favorite weather. Whenever Dad comes home from his morning errands I think of how happy you would come back after having your Munchin' from Dunkin' Donuts. Even when I go to Mimi and Pops' I think of how excited you used to get going on a car ride and going to see them. I think about you all the time.
I'm sorry we had to leave you. I hope you know it was for the best, we didn't want to see you in pain anymore. They said it wouldn't hurt and I hope it didn't, you looked very peaceful. We didn't want you to go, but you could barely move without crying. If we could have kept you healthy forever, we would in a heartbeat. We all miss you so much and we hope you're having fun and you're surrounded with slices of American cheese and as any ice cubes as you want.
Love you forever.
