A Letter to My Day One

Dear Day One,

First of all, thank you. Thank you for literally being there for me since day one. Thank you for being there every time I fell apart, for every time I did crappy on an exam and for being there to help me pull myself back together. Thank you for teaching me how important it is to have one “A1” friend instead of a bunch of “OK” friends. Thank you for telling me my outfit doesn’t look good or that I had something stuck in my teeth after lunch. We have both come a long way since the first couple weeks. Thank you.

I wholeheartedly believe that I wouldn’t have been able to make it through these first two semesters without you; you’re basically my other half. You were always there when I needed a pal to laugh with, to do homework with and to get food at 2 in the morning with. When I came to college, I never thought I would find someone who was so similar to me, yet there you are. I know I can be a bit of a handful sometimes, but you’ve stuck with me, and I can’t tell you how much I appreciate that.

This summer is going to be rough without you. I won’t be able to text you, “Meet in the quad in 5?” or ask you to get dinner with me in 10 minutes. Who’s going to laugh at all of my terrible jokes? Who am I going to watch "Bob’s Burgers" with 'til 4 in the morning? I’m going to miss you a lot, more than I can tell you. I know summer break isn’t all that long, but I can tell you it will feel like a lifetime.

While the summer will suck, I can’t tell you how excited I am for next year. We made a lot of memories this year, both good and bad, but I know we will make a million more next semester. I can’t wait to decorate our apartment or to order more baked potatoes and rolls from Texas Roadhouse. I love you, buddy, thanks for being my Day One.

Love always,

Your Day One

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
