To My College Friends As Summer Approaches

You can't get rid of me that easily.

Coming to college, I was so nervous to meet people. I have heard countless times that college was so much better than high school, that it got a lot better, but how was I supposed to believe that? How was I supposed to leave the only place that I have ever really known and find my place where I didn’t know anyone?

The truth is, I had no idea how my freshman year of college was to turn out. I remember hanging with my roommate during the first night and being terrified that my college experience would be one of those horror stories you would read on some online blog. However, I got lucky enough to have made some of the best friends I could ask for. The type of friendships that might have just begun, but will be lifelong. As one of my friends would put, “future bridesmaids.”

When I first met all of you, I truthfully did not think too much about it. I was in a weird transitioning period where I would meet someone but never see them on campus again. College is weird like that sometimes. However, you guys were different than all the acquaintances that the only contact that I have with now are watching each other’s Snapchat stories. You guys actually wanted to spend time together and I quickly realized that I had just met people that were just the same type of crazy that I am.

This is for you all. This is for the psychos who got me in a car to New York when I was just planning to leave biology and get a sandwich in the dining hall. This is for all those late night Walmart trips and screaming early 2000s music at the top of our lungs. This is for all the late night cooking and study sessions where we literally got nothing done. There is no one else I would rather go to hockey games and make terrible decisions with.

As this semester comes to a close, so does our time together for now. Although I know I will see you in September, it is crazy to think that I won’t be able to walk to your rooms or write in the group chat to see who wants to go to Dunks with me. However, I know we will still talk every day. You all know I will personally come to your homes if you think you can mess up our Snapstreaks. I have faith that I will visit the majority of you during summer break and I anticipate when you come to visit me too. There is no doubt in my mind that our craziness can only get worse when the new school years approaches.

I cannot tell you how thankful I am for finding you.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
