Blind Roommates Failing in Compatibility? Not in This Case!

An Open Letter to My Beloved Roommates
Marina Mihelich

It's undoubtedly peculiar to think we wouldn't have made the acquaintance of one another if it weren't for going in blind our freshman year of college. Having been the best five months of my entire eighteen-year-old life, I believe expressing my gratitude for you gals is the very least I could do for all that you've already done for me!

For each of us, high school was one heck of life lesson. It was a rollercoaster, for it had its ups and downs... Growing up, we developed some friendships we thought would last a lifetime. Some of those friends still continuing indestructibly throughout our lives, and others, unthinkably, drifted away. Oblivious to the extraordinary blessings college, and the man upstairs could bring, I was given the opportunity of meeting three sweet, humorous, kind-hearted, optimistic, considerate, certainly entertaining, wise, and genuine souls. Little was I aware, Grand Valley State University assigned me to not only three roommates, but three individuals who I can gladly pronounce as my best friends.

To the three of you beauties, thank you.

Thank you for your unconditional love. I am very appreciative you all share your beds and the futon for random cuddle puddle sessions with me! Also, thank you for sharing your boyfriend(s) within this random occurrence.

Thank you for including me. Making it a notion that I feel welcome no matter the circumstance is what really warms my heart. Even the smallest things, such as; going out to eat, taking a trip to hike/hammock in the ravines, listen to music together, allowing me to binge watch Netflix with you, introducing me to past/current friends, inviting me on dates with your boyfriend(s), walk to class in pairs, take part in football games, having a workout partner that motivates you to the max, studying together, and even talking to and with me.

Thank you for your support. Motivating me throughout everything that stands in front of me, encouraging me to give it my all, and to hit the audience with my best shot are what strive me to go not 100%, but 110%. Thank you for pushing me to further, greater abilities.

Thank you for your inner-child. Pranking and scaring one another behind the door and fooling around with Anna is truly our specialty! Waking up and making lovely low-key fart noises with the blue horns are the few reasons tears of hilarity come from my eyes. Throwing Alfredo around the room as if we are fearless of destructing anything is always a splendid ole' time. Thank you for creating laughter and joy in room 433 each and every day.

Thank you for being the sisters I never had. Though all of you have at least one biological sister, and I've always dreamt of having one, I am now blessed with the best of three! The quad squad bond is surely some kind of wonderful!

Thank you for your respect, honesty, and communication expertise. I believe our alliance is so strong due to our effectiveness in communicating with each other. I am thoroughly grateful for our openness, individuality, and consideration for one another.

Thank you for being the most reliable alarm clock. Blowing the horn(s), shaking one another, calling names aloud from across the room or beds to awaken the sleep, ya'll are ever so thoughtful to wake one another up to make sure missing class is not even an option!

Thank you for being you. All ya'll are beautiful both inside and out! Your personalities, mindsets, and qualities are what bring out the best in you. I hope you continue to aspire and reach higher than the stars, above all of the atmosphere, to infinity and beyond. I am so very proud of the three of you. I know you will continue to make a difference in many other people's lives, just as you have done for mine.

With sincerity and love forever,

Bed #3

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
