An Open Letter To My First College Roommate
Emily Jenkins

Dear Roomz,

As our first semester of college comes to a close, I realize there is a lot for me to thank you for. I never realized coming into college that you would be so important. Walking in, I assumed that we would just live together. I thought that we might hang out sometimes, but since we lived together, we wouldn't want to spend too much time outside of the room with each other. Boy, was I wrong.

Thank you for being an ear to listen. Whether I wanted to tell you about my classes, my relationship, my job, or how much I missed my cat, you were always ready to listen. Not only did you listen, but you laughed and cried with me (the one time I actually cried), ate a tub of ice cream with me (when necessary), and made me feel like what I had to say mattered.

Thank you for being my go-to lady. Thanks for the times you went with me to the chiropractor, which was over an hour away, agreed to go with me to Wendy's, and then drove back because I left my glasses in our room, went on random errands, or just went on roomie dates with me (which were usually comprised of Mexican food, sushi, or coffee). Thanks for being my texting buddy when the chapel speaker or my class was especially boring. And when the day was over, it didn't matter where we went or what we did; you made it interesting.

Thank you for being my third wheel. No, seriously. It means so much to me that you love me enough to be friends with my boyfriend and want to hang out with us. Thank you for the support you give me with my relationship. I honestly don't know what I'd do if you didn't genuinely care about my relationship with him.

Thank you for all of the incredibly stupid inside jokes. Just when I think they can't get any dumber (or funnier), we come up with another. They may be stupid, but they've made for some of the greatest ab workouts in my life.

Thank you for not judging me when my side of the room gets kind of messy. Thanks for understanding when I've had a rough week and letting me clean when I'm no longer stressing out about the mountain of essays, projects, and tests I have due in the span of two days.

Thank you for being my cheerleader, both literally or figuratively. Thanks for going to my church basketball games and cheering for me (even though we both know I'm the farthest thing from WNBA there is). Thanks for building me up in everything I do; you have no idea how much your encouragement means to me.

Finally, thank you for becoming my first best friend in college. Thank you for putting up with my sometimes astronomical amount of sass. Thank you for empathizing with my struggles. Thank you for always encouraging me. Thank you for understanding my introverted, and sometimes, anti-social tendencies. Thank you for being able to put up with me enough to live with me, (because let's be honest, I'm not always the best roommate) and even wanting to continue to live with me.

Transitioning into college can be hard, but you've been by my side the whole time. Thank you and I love you.

Love,

Your roomie

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
