An Open Letter To My Big Brother

Dear Big Brother,

Remember those times when we would always argue? The times when we couldn't agree on which show to watch on TV or which games to play? Or the times when we went on road trips and you took up most of the back seat? Remember the times when we fought over who got to push the shopping cart in the stores? And the times we said mean things to each other out of anger and never even apologized?

I remember all of those times so clearly. But more importantly, I remember the times that we would laugh and make jokes together. I remember when our favorite show was on and we didn't even have to decide what to watch. Or when we spent time together playing games and watching movies on road trips. I remember the time you taught me to ride my bike and how to play sports. And the time we wore matching shirts for a week straight just because. I remember every time you would try and give me advice. At first, I would act as though your advice wasn't helpful, but your advice has always meant the most.

Now that we're older and in college, we don't get to see each other every day. There are upsides to that - like not having to share the bathroom anymore or not having to hear you yell at me when I was running late for school (every day). But there are definitely more downsides to not being able to be with you every day of my life. I can't make stupid jokes about you while you're in the room and I can't ask for your help with homework (guess I'm on my own now).

I've realized that as I grow older I become more and more like you while also learning how to be myself. You're my older brother so it only makes since that I would look up to you for everything. My opinions look a lot like yours, and our personalities have become the same. But now that I'm off on my own I'm learning how to take what you have taught me and create a better me. You have taught me to stay motivated, persevere, and to never give less than my best. You have showed me what it is like to have a best friend who isn't afraid to tell me the hard truth while also truly caring about my feelings. You have made me stronger and you are the biggest reason why I try so hard to succeed.

So to finish this off, here is a final thank you. I couldn't ask for a better person to inspire me and to be my best friend. You love me unconditionally and I know that you'll never judge me. You were my first ever best friend and that will never change. Thanks for being related to me.

Love,

Your Baby Sister

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
