Lately, our world seems like the final movie of "Harry Potter," with differing opinions on which side of politics are the Death Eaters and which side are the heroes. At a time of unrest and arguments, we approach a classic American holiday that celebrates the unity of our country. Thanksgiving is a time where we Americans can come together, eat a ton of food, and recognize all the things in our lives that make us thankful. While many people believe that the second Halloween ends, Christmas season begins, I have always had an affinity towards this very American holiday. I love the opportunity to spend time eating great food with great conversation without worrying about how I would, as a full-time student, afford the gifts I would need to give.
Despite the divide between Americans, there are many things for us to be grateful for this Thanksgiving. From puppies, to the newest film in the "Harry Potter" franchise "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them," to twinkle-lights that illuminate the streets, to the sultry voice of Adele who will always be there during a bad day. To the newest Disney film Moana, in which I had the pleasure of already seeing, that teaches young girls that they can save the world without any man’s help, to the sweet taste of peppermint mochas at Starbucks, to the feeling of staying in on rainy day by the warm fire with a good book. To postcards full of happy messages of home, to warm coats that not only protect you from the cold but also can put together any outfit. To movies that make you cry and to the ones that make you laugh. To the friends and family that you trust will be there with you through all the tears and laughs.
Thanksgiving is one of the most important holidays, despite its questionable origin, because it allows us to forget all of the heartache and pain the year has brought us and realize there are many things to be thankful for this year. At a time where it appears to be easier to view the glass half empty, rather than full, Thanksgiving could not be a more important holiday.
While we all take time off of work, school, and responsibilities, it is important to remember that the holiday is supposed to represent more than just turkey, mashed potatoes, and pie; it’s about acknowledging the people and the things that we love in our lives and let them know how we feel. For this reason, Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. However, being able to eat a ton of pie doesn’t hurt.
Happy Thanksgiving!
