An Apology To The Best Friend I Pushed Away

I wish you were still in my life.

An Apology To The Best Friend I Pushed Away
Kenny Young

Dear Best Friend,

It’s weird because I don’t feel like I reserve the right to call you that anymore. You were my second half, the person I talked to about everything and the one person I knew I could call at 2am. But you were a year older than I was and when you left for college we slowly began to drift apart. It wasn’t intentionally and I know you didn’t mean it. You reached out to me occasionally and I called you when I needed you and our snapchat streak was going strong.

But fast forward and it’s the summer after my senior year, you came to my graduation and you surprised me on my senior night. You were always there still, but I just couldn’t see it. I wish I realized then that what we had that summer was better than the way things are now. Because of my stupid mistake, we don’t even talk anymore. I just see your photos on Facebook of you and your college friends and think to myself, I’m the reason why she can’t share any of this with me. You look happy though; you’re really maturing and honestly, you’ve always been such a role model. You’ve constantly blown me away with how amazing you handle what life throws at you.

But now, you don’t come to for advice. You don’t come to me when you need me and I’m just someone you knew in high school. At first, it didn’t bug me. But now you’ll randomly pop up on my phone and it makes me sad. Sad to see that things are going so well for you and you don’t randomly text me to let me know how happy you are. I miss that, more than you’ll ever know.

It makes me wonder if you ever miss me. The cliche line in breakup songs, but it’s true. I wonder if you see my picture pop up and wonder how I’m doing as well. If I could do it all over again, I wouldn’t push you away. I wouldn’t get mad because I didn’t see you because I understood you were busy. I want to text you and tell you that I’m sorry, but I’m afraid you wouldn’t listen. I’m afraid I messed up too badly that this isn’t something that we can repair. And honestly, I miss being able to call you my best friend. Because that was the best part. Having you at the other end of the phone, one state away, whenever I needed you. Because you cared about me enough to make sure everything was okay when we were hours apart. You are a good friend, not just to me but to everyone and I never appreciated that about you. I'm so sorry. I forever will be.

Love,

The Best Friend You Used to Know

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
