The presidential primary season has been the cause for debates and questions about our political process. One of the main questions at hand is, is the American election process becoming more undemocratic? Both sides of the election have shown signs of how our democratic process may not be as democratic as you think.
Democratic Superdelegates
On the Democratic side, one of the main issues is the issue of superdelegates. Superdelegates are delegates to the Democratic National Convention that are not bound to any state vote and can give their support to whichever candidate. The main goal of the creation of superdelegates was to give the party more control in selecting presidential nominees, in order to avoid crushing the defeat that George McGovern experienced in the 1972 presidential election. At the time of writing this article, most of the superdelegates are pledged to vote for Hillary Clinton, giving her a substantial lead over Bernie Sanders.
Republican Delegate Selection
On the Republican side, the big issue that is being talked about is the delegate selection process. After each primary or caucus, Republican Party leaders select people they want to send as delegates to the Republican National Convention. These delegates are bound to vote based off of the state vote in the first round of voting, but if the convention becomes contested (meaning no candidate gets the required number of votes) the delegates may vote however they please. This has been a major debate in the Republican Party as many state conventions are picking delegates that support Ted Cruz, even if Donald Trump won that state. If the convention would become contested after the first round, these delegates who are required to vote for Trump could change their vote and support Cruz. In this case, selection of the nominee would be left to the party leaders, which is great for the "Stop Trump" campaign.
The presidential primaries have been at the forefront of the media for months now. Each week, more states have cast their votes for who they want as the presidential nominees. Both political parties have also been working hard to make sure a good candidate is selected to be the presidential nominee. Time will tell to see if the parties get the nominee they are looking for.
