In only a few months the world will turn on their televisions to watch the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. As every Olympic Games seem to always get better every time, this Summer is definitely not going to be any exception. Here are the top 5 American athletes sure to make history and break records in Rio.
Michael Phelps
The most decorated Olympic athlete ever, with 22 medals in three different games, Phelps will make sure to leave his swimming career (for good this time) with a big splash. It is still unsure what events he will try to qualify in and if he will make it; however, after coming out of retirement and rehab, he has sure turned his life back around and became a new dad.
Katie Ledecky
Also a swimmer, she made her Olympic debut in 2012 and stunned the world by crushing Olympic records at the young age of 15. Within the past 5 years she has continue to become faster, breaking her own records and no one else can come close. Specializing in the 400, 800, and 1500 meter freestyle events, she makes the boring distance races exciting to watch.
US Women's Soccer Team
The US Women's Soccer Team has won gold four times and one silver to Norway ever since Women's soccer became an Olympic event in 1996. With their 5-2 World Cup win to Japan in 2015, they have a high chance of winning gold as a reigning World Cup champion, which has never been done before.
Simone Biles
At four foot nine inches Simone Bilas is simply a firecracker. Her gratify defying signature move of a double layout and half twist is named after her. Even though she was too young to compete in the 2012 Olympics, that didn't stop her from winning three straight world all-around titles, three US national titles, and 10 world gold medals (14 medals in all), Biles is simply unstoppable. The Olympics will just be another time for her to shine and will most likely have Gabby Douglas at her side.
Ashton Eaton
As if mastering one sport wasn't hard enough, Ashton Eaton excels in the decathlon and heptathlon and makes it look effortless. Eaton has six straight major titles, including gold at the 2012 London Olympics. He will be the overwhelming favorite to defend his crown at the Rio Games.
