It has been a few weeks since election night and the future of the US still holds uncertainty and doubt. For some, this is a beginning of a new era. A time in which they believe that this republican sweep of an election will solve all problems. Now, that’s their opinion, history, in the end will tell us true hindsight, but right now, this moment, we honestly do not know.
I find it extremely important to note that looking forward involves seeing the opposition of whatever ideals as equals. This means seeing all the people, the voters as equals, not racists, sexists, deplorable people, but equals. Those that voted for the conservative side can have serious reasons for voting that way. Perhaps because of their taxes and healthcare were so large or because their manufacturing job was taken from them. However, when it does come to the actual representative truth will overshadow opinion where it matters. We must understand that those that elect such representatives that have passions that are equal to your own. This is so very important looking ahead to what kind of nation we want to be. We are not in the most extreme of times as this author, but his words of wisdom and insight still hold a weight to our very moment of history. “A house divided cannot support itself.”
Most of the responses I have heard from democrats and more liberal-minded voices have one common phrase, “more than ever we must fight.” Now, don’t get me wrong, in many aspects, this is a battle for some liberties, and our planet, however, it is such rhetoric that frames the opposite side as enemies, instead of equal Americans.
It seems the most important issue of our time is not one of security, but of culture. Our acceptance of other’s values has diminished to arguments of right and wrong. Politics was not what it is now. People did not care so much of what the government was doing, but now it is all people talk about. This is fine. It's completely understandable, because government more than ever have become involved in day to day life, but it is the way we carryout such discussion that shape our future ahead. Politics is not about fighting. It is about compromise and hope for a better future. We do as much as we can within the unjust and wrong system to reform the system, the laws and most importantly the public opinion. That is what the fight is. It is not against the other side, but against the system itself. A fight against our history for the history ahead.
The election has passed. No matter the results we must endure. Endure not divided, but united. It is not just one side that wants America to be great, all Americans hold that passion deep inside them, but it is how such greatness is defined is what we must compromise for. Not fight for. Fighting implies conflict. The United States has endured enough conflict. That being said, the “fight” for greatness is not against ourselves, but against our history.
