Build Relentless Confidence With An Alter Ego

How taking on an alter ego helped me become more confident.

When considering the latter of alter, individuals assume pushy, God complex, and absorbed. The word ego distracts individuals from true meaning behind an alter ego. Many will assume that negative connotations associated with the word 'ego' will be inserted to the alter ego in a whole.

However, an alter ego is a distinctive part of an individual that is completely different from their actual self. Think of the alter ego as an individual's second self that is the better version of the double self.

In the attempt to discover the second self, one must know that it is a slow ever-changing evolution. There are tactics individuals have to use in order to dissociate themselves from their true selves when there is a calling for a different individual, a different personality.

Before I walk into a new environment my soul lifts and I become my second persona, Shirls. Shirls, the confident, the wild, the outgoing, and the free-spirited woman. Shirls is positive vibes, she is the club, the bar, and the night. While outside of a club or bar, I am Shirley. The body-conscious, observant, detail-oriented, picky, shallow woman with the fear of picking up guys or meeting new people.

That all changed when I created Shirls. That's right, I created a new persona just to have a great time. I created an alter ego to set myself free by empowering. However, I did not stop there. Shirls was still, too, quiet. There was another side of me aching to be set free. This alter ego was the sexual, flirty, and daring.

This beauty is "Dezod" (translated as troublemaker in Haitian Creole). She is the creative penis decorations on bachelorette party cakes. She set the stage and cat-walks it with ease and no fear of her audience. She reminds me of a young Beyoncé in her double-self prime.

"Beyoncé did not become the woman she is today until she created Sasha Fierce"

Reminiscing of the year 2003, Beyoncé released an epic album that took on the world by storm. She was 'Dangerously in Love' and wanted the world to know it in the rebirth of Beyoncé in the 'Crazy in Love' video.

Still shy and reserved, Beyoncé became a woman. Then, in 2008, Beyoncé blessed stages across the country in a new sexy attitude dawning stilettos. This is when she affirmed to a new persona who was aggressive, fearless, fierce, sexual, and relentless. Her alter ego on stage was Sasha Fierce: "She's too aggressive, too strong, too sassy, too sexy!"

A woman that is set to claim to her confident self when gracing a stage to over 200 fans. Even Beyoncé sought empowerment through the creation of her alter ego.

Like Beyoncé, I did not even recognize myself when I was my third persona. I became another woman and I love being her at the short moment I am her.

Everyone has an alter ego either screaming for release or withering away inside of us. This part of us is the one with the unconventional ideas; the one who walks up to the random person at the bar asking them to buy you a drink rather than waiting on the drink. Set it free and so will your confidence. Empower yourself! Find confidence in yourself by an extension of a double-self.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
