An Open Letter to My Big

To My Wonderful, Sweet Big:

I've been trying to write this letter for quite sometime now, but I haven't felt until now that I've had the right words to say it. You, my absolutely out of this world big, are nothing short of phenomenal. You amaze me and everyone around you with your generosity, love, and compassion for others.

When I began going on sister dates last spring, I didn't quite know what I was looking for in a big. I assumed that when I met the right person, I would know. From the moment we sat down at that Starbucks, to three hours after we had said the meet-up was going to end, I knew that I wanted you to be my big. Your smile was and still is contagious, and I was totally in awe of your passion for life. Meeting you was the first major step towards me feeling at home in Alpha Chi Omega.

One of the things I admire about you most, something that we have been able to share and grow with each other, is our faith in God. Last semester was a little rough for me. I missed my family like crazy, and I was taking the hardest class of my academic career. You reminded me, and still remind me, haha, that God is always there. He wants to help us and is always listening to us. Faith is powerful. You were the first person in a longtime here at Brown who didn't question why I wear a cross around my neck everyday or want to go to church on Sundays. I thank you for that.

As we've grown closer, I have realized time and time again that you are a person of incredible strength. You take what life has given you with open arms, never complaining and always working towards your goals and dreams. Not everyone can do that, can look at circumstances that maybe aren't what you want and say, "Oh yeah, I got this!" I truly believe that you will one day be a famous politician, and I will have the honor of saying, "Yep, I knew her when she had to write three papers a week."

Thank you for accepting me for me. I have always had a lot of friends, but I have never had a close-knit friend group. Joining Alpha Chi Omega and meeting you have changed my life for the better. I have made friendships that I know will last a lifetime, starting with my friendship with you.

It was a cold day in March. The sun was peaking through, trying to bring spring into the world again. You were wearing your black and white plaid coat and offered to pay for my drink. Most important detail? I knew from the moment I met you that I had met a friend for life.

Love,

Your Little <3

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
