With the New York Yankees looking toward the future 41-year-old Alex Rodriguez did not factor into their plans on the diamond. Having started just once in the last 14 games as the Designated Hitter. Rodriguez said about his playing time, "I've played almost 22 years in the major leagues and I've never sat on the bench. It was new territory, that's for sure."
When the Yankees became sellers at the trade deadline rumors began that Rodriguez would be released. And now those rumors have become true, the Yankees will release him after he plays one final game at Yankee Stadium on Friday.
Even though he's being released he'll still receive the remaining balance of his guaranteed $20 million dollar salary for this season and his entire $20 million salary for next season. In addition to receiving all of his salary A-Rod will remain with the organization as a team ambassador, instructor, and special advisor.
A-Rods 22nd season in the majors has been his worst as he's batting average is just .204 and he's hit only 9 home runs. A player that once sat on opposing pitchers fastballs before launching them over the fence can no longer catch up to them.
Hal Steinbrenner and Brian Cashman came to this agreement with him and they've revamped the Yankees aging roster in just a couple of weeks. Rodriguez isn't the only one done playing in pinstripes first basemen Mark Teixeira announced that he would be retiring at the end of the season.
Although A-Rod is done playing in pinstripes he may not be done playing in the majors. He's just four home runs away of 700 and would become only the fourth player in major league history to surpass the mark. He could return next season and
Rodriguez said, “Of course, I think I can play baseball, you always think you have one more hit in you. That wasn’t in the cards. That was the Yankees’ decision, and I’m at peace with it.”
Possible Teams for A-Rod
Miami Marlins
Miami is home to A-Rod but the problem is that they are in the National League. Where he'd have to play third base or just settle as being a pinch-hitter.
Seattle Mariners
The Mariners may consider a reunion with him. It's where he began his career as a teenager and get another chance to play with former Yankee Robinson Cano.
Boston Red Sox
Red Sox fans probably are not open to this idea but David Ortiz is retiring and the team needs a replacement at Designated Hitter position.
