Alabama politics are becoming increasingly frustrating, especially with the current conflict revolving around who deserves the open seat in the Senate. Alabama is predominately a conservative, Republican state with many prioritizing Christian values as a means for determining which political candidates deserve to be elected. While there is absolutely nothing wrong with prioritizing Christian values in this way, it along with a few other factors have created quite the stir with our two nominees.

Roy Moore is the Republican nominee. As many have probably heard, he is facing a plethora of serious rape and sexual assault allegations from young girls (as young as 14) that have weakened his campaign. Because of these allegations and the fact Moore has been removed from the bench twice, many Republican senators who previously endorsed Moore are no longer doing so.

Not too long ago, former Alabama governor Robert Bentley crashed in burned politically after his sexual misconduct in the office rose to the surface, so the last thing Alabama needs right now is another man in office who appears to be incapable of adequate moral judgment and sexual control.

Doug Jones is the equally controversial Democratic nominee. While Jones does not have any stains in the public eye as Roy Moore currently does, Jones does not adhere to certain values that Alabamians tend to back – such as his agreement with supporting Planned Parenthood and safe abortions and his opinion on more open immigration laws.

On the other hand, Jones does have the full support of the Democratic party. But even someone well supported like Jones still faces an extraneous battle when it comes to being a Democratic nominee in the state of Alabama, especially considering that Alabama has not elected a Democratic senator in over 20 years.

Everything above is mere politics. What follows is what makes these politics incredibly frustrating:

One would think that Alabamians would completely discredit Roy Moore after the horrible allegations placed against him; however, this is not the case. A large percentage of people in Alabama place so much priority on supporting the Republican party and the select values the party embodies that they support the nominees blindly. To the logic of many, they would rather have Moore representing Alabama in the Senate because he’s a Republican and because the allegations could very well be fake. Granted that is a somewhat plausible conspiracy theory, it shows the blind support process that is frustrating those on the opposite side of the polls.

Another problematic concept in the political realm comes from the ideology of Alabamians who negate blindly supporting the Republican party and actually compare the two nominees. Ellen Tipton, an Alabama Republican that openly discussed her views on the matter said: “I’m torn between voting for a pedophile and voting for a person who believes in abortion.”

This is a problem that occurs with the clash of political and religious beliefs for many in the state. True Christian values do not support pedophilia, nor do they support the promotion of accessible abortion. On one hand, I have to support those who are adhering to their values here. Pedophilia and sexual misconduct are universally unacceptable despite one’s political views; however, it is also respectable that others are holding to stances on issues (like abortion) that also go against their values.

As if this divide was not chaotic enough, many are arguing to completely opt out of both candidates completely and partake in a write-in (nice idea, you guys). Jeff Sessions seems to be the primary name thrown around for the write-in. Despite the controversy that surrounds Sessions, Alabamians who strongly oppose a Democratic nominee should seriously consider voting for him on December 12th. After all, Sessions did resign from the Senate after several years of service and know how to handle the tasks in the office.

Jeff Sessions is also pretty far right in his political beliefs. After all, he thinks all immigration (including legal) is the reason our poverty level is so high, you know since all immigrants rely on government assistance programs and steal credible jobs from hard-working Americans. He also thought the KKK to be a fine group until he found out they smoke marijuana… because marijuana is the real problem here.

Sessions also discredits climate change even though he admits that “carbon pollution is CO2, and that’s really not a pollutant… [since] it doesn’t harm anybody except that it might include temperature increases.” Excellent observation, Mr. Sessions.

All sarcasm aside here is the reality: Alabama is becoming an increasingly divided state and this special Senate election proves that divide to be evident.

According to recent polls, Moore and Jones are neck-in-neck. That poll stat is actually pretty baffling considering how conservative Alabama is as a whole and how openly Alabamians tend to support anyone in the Republican party.

There is also a decent percentage of people who do not support either candidate for ethical, religious, or other political platform reasons.

For those who are opting to write-in, you should write-in Jeff Sessions.

For those who just blindly want a Republican, write-in Jeff Sessions.

For those who are torn between professional ethics and personal views on morality, maybe consider writing-in Jeff Sessions.

If you’re not voting Dem, WRITE IN JEFF SESSIONS.

The Senate seat could be up for anyone’s grabs at this point and advocates of the Republican party are splintering. On one hand, there are those who will support anyone with a red elephant associated with their campaign despite discrepancies like pedophilic and rape allegations.

On the other, we have those who are torn between deciding which path is right – voting Democrat or voting for an accused pedophile? And on a tumb, we have those pushing to write-in someone like Jeff Sessions.

For the first time in over 20 years, Alabama has a real opportunity to cast some Democratic influence into the senate. So, split the vote! Write in Jeff Sessions instead of voting for Roy Moore, if it suits you.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
