Let's be honest: Aerie rocks. Their bras are affordable and super comfy, their clothes are always stylish, and their swimsuits are absolutely adorable. But there is another reason I love aerie so much and we as a society don't talk about it nearly enough.
A while ago, Aerie launched their new campaign "#aerieReal." If you go to their website, they describe this campaign as "That means no retouching, and thanks to your stories and support, it's also about body positivity and loving your real self - inside and out"
Aerie uses untouched, unfiltered models for the entirety of their brand. Every model is unique and Aerie embraces that. Every scar, stretch mark, and cellulite is visible in their pictures. Good thing, too because their entire goal is to promote body positivity and embracing one's body as it is- beautiful already. Aerie has hired models who support the campaign and embrace their own bodies, while encouraging their others to do the same.
If you have not already, I ask you to look up Iskra Lawrence. She is one of Aerie's models who currently wears a size 12. I spent 30 minutes the other night scrolling through her Instagram which she keeps untouched and unfiltered. She responds to internet trolls who claim she is fat by discussing her body, it's flaws, and her continued love for her body. She snaps pictures while working out, telling the world that she does so in order to eat what she wants and to remain healthy- because she wants to be. She also talks about her struggles with weight and body acceptance in the past. She encourages her followers to find inner beauty while learning to love and accept their body.
I've written about topics such as self-love and weight before. However, I feel like it is such an important topic in our society. One is either too fat, too skinny, too small, too tall or too anything else. We consistently make people feel bad about their weight or the way they look instead of trying to find our own self-love.
I am humbled by Aerie's new campaign and their desire to break free from other companies who only capture perfect angles and perfect pictures for "perfect" bodies that create an impossible standard for our society. I am inspired by Iskra who has embraced her own big thighs and bathing suit body.
I want other companies to take note of this campaign. I want other companies to attempt to create an atmosphere of inspiration, of inner beauty, and of self-love.
And I want, above all else, for this society we are living in, this society that has been engineered, to realize the impossibility of these standards and expectations. I want people to stop fat-shaming, to stop skinny-shaming, to stop any shaming.
Love yourself. Love yourself. Love yourself. And start showing some love to other people too. Let us come together in unity with the realization that every body is beautiful.
Thanks, Aerie, for starting something we should all be talking about.
