Over the last couple of years, I have found myself doling out advice to all types of people. I am by no means an expert at giving advice, but I have been in situations recently that have led me to realize a few things about life. And I want to share these thoughts with you.
Why? Because it might not be today or tomorrow, but in the future, you’re going to have a bad day. One of those I-hate-today-why-can’t-it-end-when-it-rains-it-pours type of days. You may even have a few days in a row feel like that. You may be having a horrible day right now.
I’m here to tell you that it can’t rain forever. It is impossible. Trust me.
1. Your outlook on life is purely your choice.
I know this sounds like common sense, but it never ceases to amaze me when people don’t realize this. I’m not saying that you can’t be upset or sad or angry—you are entitled to feel the way you feel. However you shouldn't dwell on this. Take a day to have a bad day, then tomorrow, keep moving forward and keep your head up. Your life is exactly what you make it to be.
2. You can't control everything.
This goes hand-in-hand with my first piece of advice. Sometimes the reason that we are upset or are having a bad day is completely out of our control. There are so many variables in life, and you only make up a tiny, tiny fraction of these variables. A number of things can happen to you or people in your life that you have no say in or no control over. If you focus on what you can control as well as your outlook on life, nothing can bring you down for very long.
3. We are extremely lucky to be alive.
Out of all of the planets in all of the galaxies in the entire universe, you were born here. You aren't a bird or a bug or a monkey. No, you are a functional, intelligent human being. The chances of you being born and being healthy is so slim that it blows my mind daily. It's incredible. That only should make you feel lucky. I know the saying "YOLO" is a joke, but in my opinion, I take it to heart. We do only live once. We are lucky to live at all. Why not make the most of it? Like I said earlier: Have your bad day—you need it once in a while. But don't ever forget how amazing it is to be alive.
4. Keep your head up. Always.
I have had a lot of things thrown my way recently. This past week, it seemed like every little thing that could go wrong went wrong. I naturally let myself cry and eat some ice cream, but in the back of my head, I told myself to pick my head up. I knew that it would get better eventually. It might not have been the next day or the day after that, but it had to get better. And for me, it did. I took my own advice above and put it to practice. I told myself to keep my head up and to focus on the positive things in my life. I changed my outlook. And here I am a few days later, happy and feeling good.
What I am really trying to tell you is that life goes on with or without you. If you want to have an amazing day, you can have an amazing day. It is all your perception. You are the only person who can truly change your day around. But you have to believe in yourself. Believe that things will turn up. Believe that things will become great again. You can do it. I promise. Take it from me.
