Advice To My Little Sister
Emily Kurtz

Dearest Little Sister,

I know we don't always get along and sometimes we fight, but that doesn't mean you're not the best little sister in the whole world and that I wouldn't do anything for you. Sometimes we're really similar and sometimes we're complete opposites. Luckily, we find some way to get along.

Since I'm older than you, I've had more experiences than you. I'm more superior (just kidding). Since I'm older, I've got some advice for you.

Listen closely.

1. Live your life the way you want to.

Just because someone is doing something cool doesn't mean you have to do the same thing, too. If you want to stay in all night and watch Netflix, do that. If you want to go out and have fun, you can do that, too! It's your life and you can do whatever you want to (within the bounds of the law, of course). Don't be afraid to stand up for what you want because if it's something you love, you'll always be happy doing it.

2. Be yourself.

Don't let anyone tell you who to be. You are unlike anyone else and it should always be that way. Don't be afraid to act goofy or joke around. Some people are going to judge you no matter what because they're just that way and like to be meanies. God created you to be who you are for a reason, and it's important that you stay true to yourself and don't let anyone change you.

3. Keep your friends close.

Friends are the most important thing that anyone can have in the world. It doesn't matter if it's your awesome big sister or a friend you met at school—keep them close because they'll always be there for you. Any time of the day or night, your friends will be by your side if you need them to be. But this also comes with a warning. Choose the right friends who you know you'll be friends with for the rest of your life and who will help you make the right choices. Losing friends is hard, so try your hardest to keep your best friends close.

4. Call for help when you need it.

This is so important. You're never on your own. There's always someone there who can help you through anything, even if you have to text or call them. Don't feel like you're alone, because you're not. There's someone constantly there for you and sometimes you just have to pick up the phone. Sometimes talking might not be easy, but always remember that help is just a phone call or text away.

5. Never give up.

This is seriously the most important piece of advice. Pay attention!

Never ever give up on your dreams. Keep trying. If you don't get something the first time, try again, especially if it's something you love. Don't let anyone tell you that you can't do something. It's so important that you keep working at the things that you love. Don't quit just because something is hard. When you succeed, you'll be so much stronger and you will finally have accomplished what you love. This also goes back to point number four. If you need help, ask for it. There isn't anything that you can't accomplish. Never ever give up.

Hopefully you'll take this advice to heart and you'll be able to do what you want in life, because I know you'll be the best at whatever you choose to do. You're the best little sister a girl could ever ask for.

Don't be afraid to call or text me sometimes. It's always nice to hear from you.

Love,

Your Big Sister

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
