Alright high school seniors, gather around because it's time for a story. Prom season is right around the corner and while some of you may be stressing about finding the perfect dress, others may be stressing about whether they want to go at all.
Two years ago, when I was a high school senior I was dating a junior who prom-posed to me in the most adorable way possible. He took me to Aruba, and prom-posed on the beach with a dessert that had sparkers on it and spelled out prom. Don't believe me?
A picture is worth a thousand words, if I do say so myself. Still, the real story happened after I got back from spring break. Senior year was stressful to say the least, and to be honest I wasn't sure if I wanted to go to prom.
I had gone my junior year with my friends who had been seniors at the time and I felt like there was no way I could top that night. I knew that my boyfriend would have his senior year to take a girl to prom, so I was not worried about robbing the night away from him. Finally, some of my friends at the time did not want to go, and I wanted to offer them the opportunity to go out and have some fun even if it wasn't at prom.
So, what was I to do? I considered going, as some of my friends told me that I would regret it if I didn't go, but in the end I had to do what I felt most comfortable with.
I took pictures with my boyfriend and friends at the park, and then I went home, changed out of my prom dress, and went with half of my friend group to C.J. Barrymore's. That's right, I completely skipped my prom and honestly, I have never regretted it. That night my class spent the night in heels and tuxedos, and I spent the night in converse playing laser tag and taking way too many pictures with my friends in the photo booth. A month later my boyfriend and I broke up, and I only talk to a few of my friends from that night anymore.
High school is almost over for you, my dear seniors, so make the most of what you have left. If prom is something that you have dreamed about since freshman year, then go and have a wonderful night. But if prom does't really seem like your style, then skip it and live with no regrets. As long as you are happy, then no one else's opinion matters.
A final tip for you, my dear seniors? As awesome as you think high school is, trust me when I say college is a million times better.
