The most common question every college student gets is “what do you want to do in the future?” Whether this comes from a family member or a co-worker, we tend to hear it more often than not. Going into my first semester of my senior year, I can scarily say that I have absolutely no clue what I want do with my future. This past semester alone, I’ve contemplated changing my major about 6 times, and this is so scary because I’m halfway done with my degree. But I’ve recently learned that there is something beautiful about not knowing.
I’ve always been one to have a set plan for myself, and recently I’ve learned that not knowing what is going to happen next is freeing. At first, having no idea where you want to end up in life is terrifying and the thoughts can even be crippling at times, but I’ve learned that these feelings are a part of life. You shouldn’t hide from them, but embrace them. Take this time of not knowing to learn and grow because there is so much you can do when you don’t know what is next.
- Try new things because it can only help you discover something you hate or love. This can also help you discover more about yourself than you ever thought possible. Doing something out of your comfort zone can be the most amazing experience you could ever imagine.
- Take Adventures. It doesn’t have to be something crazy or wild; an adventure can be something as simple as going to McDonald’s with your best friends at midnight (because everyone loves McNuggets).
- Take those feelings of fear and turn it into passion. Thrive from it and make it a strength, not a weakness.
- Never doubt something that you want to do or let anyone tell you that your dreams are too big or unachievable. You can literally do anything if you put passion and drive into whatever it is you choose.
- Surround yourself with the best people possible. Being surrounded by people that support you and care about your dreams is important. There is no greater feeling in the world than having someone else believe that you can do something amazing. With this, also surround yourself with new people and put yourself out there and meet new connections because that can be so helpful for your future.
Not knowing is an adventure on it’s own, so don’t let it scare you away from something beautiful. If you want to change your major junior year, then do it. Don’t stick with what you know because something you don’t know has an unknown ending. That ending could just be something that helps you find yourself and the path you’re happiest walking down.
