Advice To The People Pleaser

Seriously, stop expecting the most out of people who couldn't care less.

You can't change someone into being the person you imagine them to be.

You can only change yourself. And right now, as you're reading this, a light is going off as you begin to realize that you need to stop being the person who always puts in the effort.

Not clicking?

How about that friend's birthday you spent days organizing and planning so she had the most wonderful day. What she do for your birthday? Nothing. Oh thats funny! Something must have come up.

How about that day of girly activities you had planned with your sister? Halfway through, she asks you to take her somewhere better? Oh don't stress it, it must have been a crazy fun time.

Or the night before you leave for college, preparing to not seeing your boyfriend for six months. You show up with a picture of you two, a long letter pouring your heart out, and all dressed for a nice dinner. He cuts it short and rushes you out to go to see his friends instead. It must have been an emergency, right? Something crucial that made him skip out on your last night together.

Everything will be fine.

Well, everything is not fine.

Why are you always the do-er and never the one being happy from all that wasted effort? You have gathered the reputation of being the nice friend. Cut it out! You must have a sign on your forehead that says, "Please, walk all over me!"

I'm not saying you should turn into a cold, heartless witch... but you have to be a little stronger than this, kid. Take care of yourself over anyone else, because when the lights turn on and the show is over, you're going to be walking yourself home and putting yourself to bed.

No one is going to do it for you.

Pleasing everyone and expecting the same maximum effort is not smart, for starters, but it's also no healthy for your fragile little heart. There will never be another person with the same soul as you. There will never be someone who loves you the way you love yourself, so why waste it on others? Buy yourself that diamond necklace, take yourself to nice dinners, and plan yourself that birthday party. If you love open fields of flowers, go take yourself on a damn picnic there. If you love funny movies, pop that corn and watch it.

Do what you love and the right people will fall into place. Choose you.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
