Adjusting to New Random Roommates

Its the start of a new semester! For some of us, that means new roommates...some are great, and some leave their socks out in the living room to stink it up the apartment (you know who you are).

As summer ended, we have to deal with finding new roommates. Some of us failed and found random people to fill our empty spots, people we don't know, who now live literally next to us. Maybe you got lucky and got a clean and interesting roommate...maybe you didn't.

So lets look at ways to handle these new situations. You could try and get along with these new people and enjoy their company, you could shut them out and never leave your room, or, you could dominate the room and force them into their room.

Assuming you got even the best roommate, they all have one thing that's going to bug you to the end of your wits. Do you spray them with a bottle of water or scold them? Do you ignore it until they eventually part ways and leave after an unbearable year? Or do you just have a good old fashion sit down and talk it out?

The best way to deal with all these things is get to know these people you'll be sleeping within 30 feet of for the rest of  this year. Go out to dinner and invite them to some of the things that you can both enjoy, and who doesn't enjoy laser tag? If they're busy, try to spend study time with them. Or if you get lucky, the could become a new brother or sister in your organization!

I have a random who started living with me and my buddies and just took our last spot so we could all afford rent. He just so happens to be a business student, so basically he's never going to get out of pledging our fraternity.

But in the end, your roommate situation will always be interesting. You'll have to deal with it in your own way, with your personality influencing your decisions. So when you meet your new randoms, or if you're lucky enough to greet the same old faces you stayed with last semester, get to know them and learn to love or hate them.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
