10 Signs You're Addicted To Social Media And Desperately Need A Hiatus

There's a fine line between being connected and being addicted. However, sometimes it helps to be cognizant of the fact that social media apps have been manufactured to keep us hooked to our screens. If you need clarity on whether or not your social media use is a problem, this article is for you.

1. The first thought you have in the morning is to check Instagram and Snapchat for notifications

The day can't start unless you have spent at least 20 minutes doing so. It's also the last thought you have at night. Sometimes you lose sleep, endlessly scrolling.

2. You’re not fully present with the people around you

Even if you're not being the worst by checking your phone while you have a whole person in front of you, your mind is still with your phone.

3. You feel uncomfortable if you can’t reach your phone

If you're in a situation where you can't check your apps, you will escape to the bathroom to sneak a peek.

4. You spend hours obsessing over the details of the pictures you post

You spend hours more, constantly refreshing the page for comments or likes.

5. You care more about the virtual world than the real world

You don't care about keeping up with your friends, but you hold a grudge when someone doesn't like your photo.

6. You’re living your life for likes

Sometimes you will go out of your way for the aesthetic post. You might even buy food you have no desire to eat, just to look cute on your story. When you get together with your friends, taking pictures is the main event. In the back of your mind, you're already planning your caption.

7. Your mind feels hazy

You feel like your attention span is nonexistent. All those hours in front of a screen will do that to you!

8. You don’t even want to be on your phone but you keep finding yourself scrolling

You have no idea how you planned to do one thing, and then ended up on the explore page for hours. It's like you blacked out. You hate yourself for it. You would much rather be reading a book, or catching up on your work- but it feels like you have no control.

9. You’re socially drained

You're replying to DMs and comments out of a force of habit, and you're so tired of responding to every notification. By the time people come to talk to you in the real world, you have no energy to spare.

10. Your priorities aren’t straight

You are behind on all of your work yet you still make time for social media. Just deactivate your accounts already, before you lose any more precious time.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
