Alright, it's time to get something straightened out.
This past Monday one of the most popular hashtags on my Instagram, Twitter and Facebook was #NationalGirlfriendDay. It was mainly accompanied by a picture of a happy couple and a cute caption. But that isn't the point of the whole day! National Girlfriends Day is a day for girlfriends to get together and celebrate the kind of friendship that really, only girls can have.
The first time I had heard about this national day, was one of my best friends texting me at one in the morning telling me she loves me and explaining the day. And that is the entire reason behind it in the first place.
This was created so that there is an entire day to tell your best friends how special they are, how amazing they are, and how much they mean to you. It is a day to put the boyfriends aside, and spend a day, with just the girls. Watching your favorite chick flicks, or horror films, and eating chocolate, or pasta. It's about a call or a text to an old girlfriend to catch up. It's also about building each other up, instead of tearing each other down. Telling one of your best friends that she is a warrior and she deserves someone who will help her conquer the world. Letting a passerby you don't know quite as well know that she is rocking the romper.
I'm not saying any of this to disregard the cute couple posts, but the couples have Valentine's Day, the women crush Wednesdays, man crush Mondays, and a plethora of other hashtags. And although we shouldn't need a day to tell the girlfriends in our life how important they are, sometimes it's a nice reminder to do so.
So, to all of my girlfriends, you're all amazing human beings. You deserve the world and more, and I can't wait to see how great you are when you realize you can do anything. I am so lucky to be able to go through this life with you all, knowing we're supporting each other the entire way. Keep killing the game of life everyday.
