Recently, Facebook has encountered some “news-worthy” drama. This crisis has led to more people wanting to be made aware of what exactly they are signing up for every time they join a media platform or check the box that says “I accept these terms and conditions.”
Now, this doesn’t mean most people are starting to read the minimum of 28-page documents that are written in such a confusing language that even if attempted, would bore you so much you would give up halfway down the first page.
This does mean, however, that many social media users are limiting, even more than before, what they share with others. Yes, there will still be those who continue to post all about their personal life and just figure if they’re going to find eventually, might as well make it easy on them.
I have a little different approach. I plan on still sharing experiences I have and allowing those I am not near to have an idea what I am up to and that yes, I am still alive and well. But making sure I truly am okay with websites having access as well.
All the accounts I have logged in through Facebook seems to be a rather scary number right now. All the links that ask for permission to your account but without the ability to post can gain access to your email information and anything else you have set to your profile regarding relationships, family members and so forth.
With media being such a major part of society and the current generation it seems rather hard to just unplug completely and save yourself from having security issues. There is a balance though and finding it is the key.
Making sure you are careful on your Instagram, Snapchat or Facebook “story” posts is important, because although it may disappear from you and your friends' eyes after 24 hours, it still is very much out there in archives that can be hacked.
Interesting enough, I myself have received three emails from other media platforms and apps on my phone with updated Terms and Conditions, as well as clarification on their terms of use. The users and owners are starting to take notice and it's making people nervous. Will this have an impact on what and how much is shared now?
For those younger who maybe don’t realize what exactly technology and the world has a hold of and can view, now might be the time to help them understand.
Just remember, if it’s out there for one person or website, it’s out there for all.
