1. Get involved.

Don't be scared to branch out and try new things. College is a time to explore the world and try and find yourself so even if something remotely interests you, try it out. The worst thing that could happen is that you won't like it!

2. Rain

Be prepared for weather. There have been tornado warnings, flash floods, and severe weather warnings and the university didn't cancel class once. Make sure to bring your rain boots and rain jacket to school and always carry an umbrella with you. Trust me, there is nothing worse than having to sit through an hour and a half lecture when you're soaking wet.

3. Don't spread yourself too thin.

I highly encourage everyone to be involved in at least two campus organizations. Whether it's Greek life, a religious organization, intramural sports or robotics club, it's important to be involved. However, being involved in too many activities can put a lot of pressure on someone. College is stressful, so make sure you give yourself enough time to relax and do other things. It's super important to take care of yourself.

4. Call your Family

It's normal to move out and enjoy college and the independence that comes with it. Just don't forget about your family. They've supported you since day one, and they only want the best for you. So, whenever you have a free minute, try to call home. College is a new stage in your life, but you leaving is a new stage for your parents as well!

5. Don't overstress.

I promise you, there is enough time to get everything done. College is a lot of work, and on top of the work, you're adjusting to a completely new life. So don't stress, it gets easier. One of the most important things is learning how to manage your time. If you don't do it correctly, you'll be up until 4 am writing a 10 page paper and it will not be good.

6. Spend time with your professors.

Go to their office hours, ask questions and email them. Make sure your professors know who you are. They're there to help you and teach you and the majority of them are passionate about what they're teaching. Don't be scared, because if they see that you're trying and you made an effort, they'll be more inclined to round your grade up!

7. Go to class.

YOU ARE PAYING TO BE AT SCHOOL. Do not waste your money. Going to class is half the work. If you go, then studying becomes easier, your tests make more sense and you wont stress as much over finals. It really is that simple. GO TO CLASS.

8. Budget for the bars.

Going to the bars and going out with your friends is one of the best parts about college. However, it's expensive. Make sure you have a budget and stick to it, because it sucks when you go to the bar only to realize you only have enough money for one drink.

9. Don't ever do your laundry on a Sunday night.

Seriously, just trust me. People will move your clothes, steal your clothes, literally throw them in the trash can. It's a jungle and the worst days, are Sundays. Just pick a different laundry day. Seriously.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
