I'm no dermatologist, but I'm almost 20 years old and I've had acne since I was 11, so believe me, I know how it works. Acne is awful, whether it's on your face, back, chest, or even when it manages to find its way onto your butt (my friends have told me).
I've never had it completely awful, but I've had my ups and downs with it, especially when I started college and when I tried new makeup. So here is my list of my favorite products, why I use them, and what they're good for. I'm not a foolproof, never have a zit on my face kind of girl, but I do have to say my skin is more clear than some others, and I have had people ask me what I do for it. All of the links attached go to the products I have listed. All but two of these products can be found at your local convenience store.**
1. SPF
I work outside, and the sun kills my skin, as well as dries it out. So I always try to wear sunscreen, use a foundation with SPF, or use a good moisturizer. I have tried different face sunscreens, but have had the best luck with Neutrogena products, like their face and body stick or the clear face sunscreen. They both are easy to apply and don't make my face feel sticky.
2. Moisturize
The main moisturizer I have stuck with is also from Neutrogena. Although it does not stop acne, it hasn't clogged my pores and is very lightweight. This moisturizer comes in different types, but the one I use is for combination skin. Neutrogena also has products to cover up acne. They team up with makeup products, too, to double up the moisturizer's effects. But I stick to the normal, easy moisturizer.
3. Wear Makeup Only When Needed
When I first started college, I wore make up every day. Not only did it put a burden on my bank account (makeup is expensive, as we know), but it made my face break out. I would forget to take it off, which always was fun for my pillows, too. But once I only started wearing it when I went out, my face got clearer and my skin felt better. Your professors don't care how you look (hopefully), they only care how you perform as a student. So when I did decide to wear makeup, I always took it off with these wipes, one for hydrating if my face was dry and night calming when it wasn't.
4. Wipe
it off
Not only do I mean taking it off with the makeup remover, but if you're outside or at a gym sweating, you need to rinse your face. At work, I always end up splashing my face with water. When I go to the gym, I wash my face before and after, or else I always end up breaking out. If you're sweating, it feels good to just rinse off your face. So even if you don't have access to your face wash right then, just rinse off your face with water and use face wash later. It'll help, and you'll feel better.
5. Drink it off
I'm so bad with this one, but drinking water will not only help clear up your acne, but it'll hydrate your skin and you will feel better overall. So always carry water with you, and not only will you notice a difference in your face, but in everything else as well. I carry this Camelbak water bottle, which some require you to bite the mouthpiece. It's weird, but I realize I drink more water with it and a lot of other people notice it too.
6. Pick a good face wash and wash twice
I've alternated between two face washes in the past, Oxy and Cetaphil. When the Oxy stops doing its job, I try Cetaphil to see if the Oxy is too strong, and normally it is. And once the Cetaphil stops doing its job, I switch back. Oxy is normally good for the summer, when my face is really oily. I really like the foam Cetaphil because I feel it spreads easier.
Wash your face twice! This is another one that I am bad at, but I try to wash my face in the morning and at night. If I work out or get really sweaty, I'll wash my face more. But I realize when I only wash it once a day, I start breaking out.
7. After washing
After I use face wash, I apply Neutrogena Rapid Clear, Daily Leave On Mask. Neutrogena and other brands have spot treatments, but I like this one because it helps your whole face and gets spots that you might not notice need help. I've been using it for about two months and absolutely love it.
8. Fun masks
I love trying different masks that I find online. My two favorites can be found at Sephora,** Glamglow and Origins' 10 Minute Mask. I have loved both, but they seem to be a little bit pricey, especially for college students. So, another favorite of mine works as both a wash and a mask, Neutrogena Clear Pore Cleanser/Mask. All of these make my skin tingle and feel fresh, so if you're feeling like spending $70 on a mask, go to Sephora. You might find a different mask better suited for you there. If not, it's OK. Neutrogena, or any other brand, can still work wonders.
9. If all else fails. . .
See your doctor or a dermatologist. They might recommend medicine or other things. The doctors know more, but this is what I have learned. A lot of my friends had to go on prescription medicines to clear up their acne.
So whether you are just looking for different products to try or a way to clear up your face, don't just stick to what I'm saying. My products and habits work for my skin, but you might need a different routine. Either way, just figure out what's best for you.
