10 Things That Happened When I Quit Wearing Makeup

I quit wearing makeup altogether and the benefits were unreal.

At the end of my freshman year, I gave up wearing makeup. I had been wearing makeup for years and had fallen completely dependent on it. Unfortunately, my face had been plagued with acne since I was in the sixth grade and I hoped that laying off of the makeup would clear up my face. Instead, I got so much more out of it.

1). I get more sleep

Instead of spending extra minutes in front of the mirror applying makeup in the morning, I can spend that time somewhere else. Like in bed, asleep. Let’s be honest, who doesn’t love getting a few extra minutes of shut-eye in the A.M.?

2). My makeup skills surprisingly got better

I don’t know how or why, I can’t explain it, but somehow the lack of applying makeup everyday somehow improves your makeup skills.

3). My skin thanked me

There are numerous beauty products out there that will help assist in preventing breakouts from occurring. Unfortunately, these products usually cost a pretty penny. I used these products for years when I was constantly facing breakouts. They never seemed to do what they claimed to do - prevent clogged pores. Within a week of no longer wearing foundation, concealer, or blush, my face miraculously cleared up.

4). Compliments become worth so much more

Whenever someone compliments the way I look when I’m not wearing makeup, it suddenly means so much more.

5). My imperfections are much more easier to embrace

I spent years trying to achieve the perfect look that would fix my crooked nose, emphasize my eyes, all in all fix my imperfections. Once I quit wearing beauty products, the imperfections I spent so long trying to cover up became easier to love.

6). My wallet reaped the benefits

It’s no lie that makeup is expensive. But the cost of makeup doesn’t stop at just the makeup products. When using makeup, you must also invest in applicators, brushes, remover, etc. When you’re not wearing makeup as much, your wallet will thank you. Who doesn’t love to have a little extra spending money in their pockets?

7). The simplicity of it all does wonders

Getting back to the basics is a hard task to accomplish. But once you feel at ease with your natural face, the simplicity of your look develops a sense of harmony. In additional to simplicity in the physical sense, the simplicity of your mornings lead to a less stressful morning. It’s tiring to ensure that you’ve blended well enough or that your lines are even. When you stop wearing makeup, you don’t have to deal with extra stress in the morning leading to a more peaceful day altogether.

8). I gained a new perspective

I love to see different points of view. I believe that one can never gain too much knowledge. Once you begin to live without makeup, reapplying it once more can begin to feel strange. You might even feel as though you don’t need makeup anymore.

9). My hair gained more attention

Without applying makeup, I had more time to spend on my hair. I was able to try different styles and see what works best for me.

10). Most importantly, nothing changed

No one treated me any differently, which is what I was most concerned about. I was scared that people wouldn’t think I was pretty enough to achieve a natural look. Even if people thought that, they kept it to themselves. However, within a few weeks of not wearing makeup, I realized that it didn’t really matter what anyone else thought. The people who should be in my life will be in my life regardless of how I look.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
