Most of my friends think that I’m a little crazy for going to college with my sister. They always say, “Oh, I could never do that,” or, “I definitely don’t get along with my sibling well enough for that.” My little sister only visited UR because I was a student there, and she ended up loving it as much as I did. So when Fall 2014 came around, we were enrolled at the same college, and it has made for some very interesting (but nonetheless awesome) experiences.
1. You automatically have a new group of friends.
In my case, they were all younger, because I was a junior when my sister started her freshman year, but my sister had a whole group of friends before she even started college, because of the people she met through me.
2. You get called the wrong name. Constantly.
Sometimes I’m Taylor, and sometimes I’m Kari, but we are always “The Rawls Sisters.”
3. You always have someone to eat breakfast with.
Or lunch. Or dinner. Or someone to order pizza with a 2 a.m.
4. You always have someone to go to if you have a question or a problem.
Even if you know they won’t be able to help you, it’s nice to have someone on your side.
5. Everyone is surprised when you actually go somewhere without her.
I went to school for two years without my sister, but for some reason all of my friends are surprised when I do things on my own.
6. You find things that you like to do on your own.
I’ve been in Glee Club since freshman year, and my sister joined the women’s rugby team when she got to school. Siblings may look similar, but they are still two separate people with separate interests.
7. You also find things that you like to do together.
My sister and I both participated in Relay for Life in high school, so now we are both part of the committee as college students.
8. You absolutely still argue and get annoyed with one another.
Kari and I get along great for the most part, but we fight like all siblings do.
9. But in the end, you have the best time of your life.
Everyone asks me, “Do you like going to school with your sister?” Honestly, I love it.
