I loved college and, for the most part, loved all my roommates (except the crazy few - you know who you are.) It's a fun time in your life having one or more partner-in-crimes to do the grocery shopping, chores, and have someone able to always do things with you. When that time in your life comes where you're ready to venture out on your own and get your own place, you'll soon realize that it's some of the best times of your life, and here's why:
1. You report to you and only you.
No one's texting you wondering where you're at or when you'll be home, because it's just you. If you've had a bad day, you don't have to come home to someone prying into your life, or if your roommate has had a bad day, they're not taking it out on you because, well, you live by yourself!
2. Your place shows of your interests.
Want to hang a new photo on the wall or change the curtains? Go for it, because it's your place. When people walk in and love how your place looks, they're really saying something about you because they're what you loved and wanted to showcase in your home.
3. You can be as loud as you want.
4. No one's eating your food or drinking your beer.
Long gone are the days where you open the fridge and get a little salty because your to-go box from your favorite restaurant is gone. Your food is now your food, and no one is drinking even just one of your beers thinking it goes unnoticed.
5. You don't have to wait to shower, pee, cook, etc.
Need to pee? It can happen in the next 3 seconds. Need to shower? You don't have to worry about all the hot water being gone. There's no more mess in the kitchen when you need to cook, unless you're just a slob yourself.
6. You save so much toilet paper.
With roommates, you were buying toilet paper every other week it seemed. It would always conveniently be gone when you went to do your business, and nobody else seemed to ever buy it. Living on your own? Not a problem. A pack of TP lasts you months upon months, and you're the only one to blame when it runs out.
7. You can have guests over at any time of day...
No more asking if it's cool that your best friend from high school crashes at your place for the weekend when their visiting or shooting that IOU text to your roommate when you decide to bring someone home for the night. It's your house, your rules. Bring whoever you want over.
8. ...or come home at any hour of the night.
Stay out and close the bars with your friends without feeling guilty stumbling in a little loud for 2 a.m. Just remember, you've got to take care of yourself and that hangover in the morning.
9. Clothes are optional.
Want to spend the whole day in an oversized t-shirt, panties, and some fuzzy socks? Go ahead. No one's gonna walk in on you and wonder why you're being a lazy bum and not wearing pants.
So if you weren't convinced that moving out on your own was the right thing to do, I can only imagine what you're thinking now. It's a scary jump to be out on your own, but it's also one of the most freeing moves you'll make.
