It's finally October! You know what that means? It's Halloween season! Halloween is by far my all-time favorite holiday and for people like me it lasts all month! There's just so much to love about Halloween that makes it the best. I narrowed down my list to the top nine reasons why I love Halloween season.
1. Halloween!
I am not sure who else out there my age is as much as a kid at heart as me, but I can't think of any other holiday that brings my free spirit as much joy as dressing up as anything I want and trick-or- treating around my neighborhood. I am a freshman in college, and I'm pretty sure most of my classmates from high school stopped trick or treating years ago, but not me! Just until last year I did it, where I didn't go out because I was visiting my mom for Halloween weekend, but even then I couldn't help but dress up. I painted half my face as a skeleton and took pictures to celebrate Halloween since I couldn't go out. On Halloween night, you can dress as creepy or funny, freaky or weird or anything you like, and that's the fun of it all.
2. Dressing up
I guess this kind of correlates with the holiday itself, but who says you only have one night to dress up? Here in my dorm the other night I saw some girl run by in a Harley Quinn costume, and the other day walking on campus I witnessed a guy in a Santa costume. In high school, I knew at least two girls who would occasionally wear creepy looking contacts to school and freak people out. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I also had a friend who came to school with vampire fangs which was just awesome because you wouldn't think anyone would do that. When October comes around that is when I just love to express how much I love Halloween and all the creepiness that comes along with it.
3. Candy
Candy is ALWAYS on sale in October and I am quite the candy freak. It just seems like tradition now to buy bags and bags of candy around this time. Grocery stores and stores like Walmart start to sell those huge bags of candy for like $8 and honestly it's a surprise I don't go broke in October. It's the one holiday where it's completely acceptable to eat an entire five pound bag of candy in one night. I mean what's better than getting sugar high on delicious candy?
4. It's finally fall!
One other great thing about Halloween season is that it is finally fall and not that beginning of fall crap when New England gets its "Indian summers" where it's September and still ridiculously hot. Halloween season, aka October, is finally the time of the year where it finally is starting to get a little chilly out. It's time to break out your hoodies, sweaters, gloves, Ugg boots and scarves. I love being able to be in a sweater or a hoodie walking to class without sweating like crazy. Then there's the leaves when they change color. Especially if you live here in New England, you know how pretty it is in the fall.
5. Pumpkin carving
I personally am not one of the many people who is excited over the pumpkin spice lattes in October, but what I do love is pumpkin picking and pumpkin carving. You get to take a pumpkin, take out all the seeds and gross looking stuff, and I just love the smell (weird, I know). Then, you get to give your pumpkin character; you can carve out a face of a celebrity you like, a quote you like (the creepier the better), you can carve out a simple "Happy Halloween" and you can even go with a traditional scary pumpkin face with triangle shapes. After it's carved you get to put a tea light candle in it, put it outside and make your porch look festive. However, in my opinion, the best part of carving pumpkins is the pumpkin seeds! I love love love cooking and eating pumpkin seeds, they are my obsession snack near Halloween. Just drizzle some olive oil over them, add the perfect amount of salt and bake!
6. Decorations
Halloween decorations are the best because they're festive and fun without overdoing it like some people do with Christmas decorations. From pumpkins to skeletons and ghosts to spiders to spider webs and lights, there's such a variety that can make decorating for Halloween so much fun. Most of these decorations are so simple that it's almost impossible to overdo it so you can go crazy with decorations and release your inner psycho and make your house festive.
7. It's hoodie weather
Break out your hoodies!! And sweaters and cardigans, whatever you like to wear because 'tis the season. I am obsessed with hoodies; if I could wear them 365 days a year I totally would. Since unfortunately I can't because we experience all four seasons in New England, I instead just embrace the part of year when I can. I love how cozy and snuggly hoodies can make you feel, along with sweaters and cardigans, and we can't forget about scarves. It's that time to put on fuzzy boots and warm hoodies and grab a blanket and watch scary movies.
8. Haunted houses and graveyards
There's nothing like getting followed by abnormally tall skeletons or getting jumped at by scary clowns (maybe I shouldn't joke about clowns.. ha ha). Every year, my hometown has this haunted graveyard for $10 and you go around this trail where they have people volunteer as werewolves and as freaking people cutting up other people with saws and stiff like that. Then, the hayride stops at this barn that is "hunted and you put on 3D glasses and go through it and I swear I jump and scream through that entire thing but I love it! There's just something about getting scared and freaked out that many people love, I guess maybe it's the adrenaline rush. I'm not too sure but I know i will always love my haunted graveyards, barns, houses you named it I love everything spooky.
9. SCARY MOVIES!!!!!!
Finally, my favorite part of Halloween! Halloween movies!! There's just so many good originals like Hocus Pocus, The Nightmare Before Christmas, ALL of the Halloween movies, ALL of the Halloweentown movies, The Adams Family, Beetlejuice and many many more. There's is absolutely nothing like getting all snuggled up with some popcorn to watch some creepy movies in the dark that make you drop and spill the popcorn everywhere. Scary movies just have that fear factor that many people, including myself, love so much and they're great to get into the creepy Halloween spirit!
