February is Black History month and commemorates important figures from the African American community.There are numerous people in history whose actions, and also their words, have made an immense impact on the world. The words from these historic figures still resonate with us today. To commemorate Black History month and to share some inspiration, here are 9 quotes that may cause you to reflect during the month of February and beyond.

1. “Darkness can not drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Dr. King is one of the most prominent figures in black history and rightly so. He advocated non-violence as a way to end all hardship, which this quote captures. Now more than ever are Dr. King’s words needed in this time of terrorism in the world and police brutality in the black community. Not only is his philosophy one to live by, but is one that can make a change in the world.

2. “I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”- Dr. Maya Angelou

This quote completely embodies the success Maya Angelou achieved during her lifetime, even while living in the early 1900s South where discrimination ran deep. Her words will always be relevant because of the truth they hold, that people always will remember the impact you have on them and to strive to positively influence them. She achieved many things, including earning over 50 (yes, 50) honorary doctorate degrees. Dr. Angelou is a living example of what her quote exemplified. You never know how much your words or actions can impact someone.

3. "I have learned over the years that when one's mind is made up, this diminishes fear; knowing what must be done does away with fear." - Rosa Parks

In this quote, Rosa Parks is referring to her bus boycott, which was a major movement in Black History. Her words speak volumes on being able to accomplish anything if you put your mind to it. If you set your mind to accomplishing something, all worries and doubts will fade.

Oprah Winfrey is known for her tremendous career of giving back to the world. Yes, “everyone gets a car,” is somewhat of a motto for her. Oprah's quote embodies that, her love for what she does and the happiness it brings her. This is something everyone can live by, to love what you do and not to worry about the outcome. While all of us may not be able to give cars to hundreds of people or build schools in Africa, finding a place in this world that brings fulfillment can have the same impact.

5. "There is no easy walk to freedom anywhere, and many of us will have to pass through the valley of the shadow of death again and again before we reach the mountaintop of our desires."- Nelson Mandela


Nelson Mandela was prominent not only in black history but primarily African history as an anti-apartheid revolutionary, former President of South Africa and philanthropist. Mandela’s words are ones worth pondering over, the concept that hardships and struggles eventually lead to achievement.

6. "Without a struggle there can be no progress." - Fredrick Douglass

For a man that was known for his words this quote may seem short and simple, but Fredrick Douglass’ quote is worth meditating on. Many of us are struggling with something from day to day, for this quote can apply to finishing a difficult workout or overcoming a difficult time in your life. As an abolitionist and social reformer, Douglass understood that with the hardships that came with overcoming slavery there would be eventual liberation.

In recent time, Viola Davis became the first black woman to an Emmy for Best Actress in a Drama Series. This quote was an excerpt from her acceptance speech. While her speech caused some disagreement, it was meant to show how far women have color have come to breaking stereotypes in Hollywood.

Lupita is another actress that has broken the mold of how beauty or success can be defined. Lupita Nyong'o was the first Kenyan actress and first Mexican actress to win an Academy Award. Whatever stands in your way, Lupita's words can relate to those obstacles. No matter how unattainable your dream may seem, you have every right to strive for them. It's easy to feel tied down by society, but Lupita and Viola are proof that you can break any mold and achieve your dreams.

Jackie Robison is prominent for being the first African American to play major league baseball. His life and what he had to endure by being the first black man in the major league made an impact on many athletes now. Jackie Robinson's quote can apply to anyone regardless of the stage in life they are in. While finding yourself and deciding on the path for your life, it is important to reflect on how you can make a difference in the world. Your life has value, and you will find happiness by making a positive impact on others.
